Can points be split for resale?

I am looking to buy a small package and all of the listings are relatively large. If I were to find someone else looking for a small package could 2 parties split all the costs and buy 1/2 of the package for themselves, without having to deal with each other after the initial purchase and splitting? Or could a buy a large package and then sell the portion I can't use?

The simple answer is no. Contracts can not be split, before or after the sale.

Yes, those are two separate contracts and may be sold separately. There will be two unique contract numbers - even though they are combined into one membership.

Either contract may be sold - so you could sell the 150 point contract and keep the 60 points.

In the scenario you describe, the 150-point master contract and the 60-point add-on contract are two separate contracts so they can be sold separately and most likely would be sold separately. I suppose the seller could package them as "two contracts, must buy both" but it's unlikely they would do that. Main reason is that the 60-point contract would sell at a premium if sold separately. The seller would make less money on the sale if they sold the two contracts together.

Several months ago, I purchased a 116 point HH contract through resale where the original contract was 50 points and the prior member had also done an add-on of an additional 66 points. There was no mention of the split contract during the conversation with the selling agent, only that it was 116 points. I was surprised when the paperwork arrived for signatures and I saw there were two contract numbers. I called the seller's agent and asked if there was any significance to the contract having two separate contract numbers instead of just one and was told there wasn't. The agent's response was "116 points is 116 points". The contract seemed like a good deal as the price was within a few dollars of the other available larger HH contracts, and it had triple points available, but now it sounds even better!

I hope this hasn't confused the issue for the OP. I brought this up as an example, but I really didn't know if it was possible to split the contracts separately, since it wasn't even mentioned as a selling point when I bought the contract. It seems that there are possibilities, even though they are exceptions, to many things in the DVC resale world.

Once you are a member, you can add on as few as 25 points at a time as a separate contract.

That is why you will find smaller contracts available for resale.

A 150 point contract to initially buy in is a requirement from DVC if you purchase directly from them. If you don't purchase directly from them, but from a reseller, you can still purchase a contract that is smaller and closer to what meets your requirements. Why not just decide how many points you want and contact a reseller and ask them to notify you when a contract becomes available that meets your requirements? You may have to wait a short while, but small contracts become available fairly routinely, they just get purchased fast.

There are members who only have small contracts, and bank and/or borrow their points and only go once a year or once every other year. With a 50 point contract, you could have a studio in Old Key West for check-in on Sunday and departure on Friday in May, just as an example. Or you can bank this years points and use the with next years points and have 100 points. You can also borrow the following years points and have 150 points available to use. There is tremendous flexibility in the system.

Even though I am a new member, I must differ with this statement. We bought a 150 point OKW contract, only plan to travel to WDW one week per year, and I hope 150 points is enough. I can't imagine someone wanting a smaller contract than that. JMO

Maybe I should have been more clear. I said I only vacation about once a year, but it is not only at Disney (not by my choice,btw, I would live in Disney). I would only use my DVC points every 2-3 years. The reason I want to buy is to ensure myself a WDW vacation regularly , pay for it slowly (dues) and secure a reasonable price as hotel rates are rising faster than DVC dues. I understand that I can use DVC points outside of Disney, but I don't want to always have to plan my vacations around them. I do not want my points to become a hassle for me. I can always buy 25 more, right?

While maybe not cost effective, I think it's still possible to buy in resale for a smaller contract though the price per point will be somewhat higher. I don't think it's true that DVC is buying up all the small contracts though they likely should be for new members due to the relatively higher cost of dealing with them. If you have a friend who's a member, they could add on the sell it to you so you could get exactly what you want including AKL coming up.
