Could my child take a backpack as a carry on? I thought it would be nice for him to carry some snacks, his PSP or maybe some books.
We will be flying to WDW.

Absolutely. :sunny: I personally think it is a good way to help kids to start to learn the art of planning and packing.

Yes he can use his backpack as his carryon. We did this with our grandson last year and it worked great.

:flower: Both my kids took their backpacks as carry ons. It was great! We packed paper and markers, gameboy, favorite toys for them, this way we didn't have to pack it in suitcases either!

Yes Just remind the kids that they must put the backback on the X ray machine while going through security.

Just be sure to have him remove all the school supplies. My 17 yo DS took his backpack and I learned why his bag got searched after going thru the Xray machine. He must have left like 40 pens and pencils in his backpack and apparently it looked rather suspicious. When they searched it, about the only other thing in his backpack was his bed pillow - that's his "lovey" and he always travelled with it.

As long as he is a paying customer with his own seat he can take one piece of luggage and one personal item.

DD takes her rolling back pack on as her carry-on (it holds an 8 day supply of clothing) and has a smaller back pack as her personal item which fits under the seat (to store books/papers/snacks).

Would a kids backpack count as a piece of luggage carry on or as a personal item?

Myself, my dh, and our 2 girls each carry a backpack as our carry on. We all have our own personal items such as 1 outfit, nessasary items like glasses or medicine, and what ever will entertain us for the flight like books, magazines, ect. The 1st time we flew w/ the girls my youngest was 3 we forgot to tell her about the xray machine and when it came time to put the bag through it she through a fit , poor thing thought they were taking away all her special things. So just explain it and stress that they will get the bag right back and this will work out great.

Dd has been traveling since she was 5 and has always carried her own backpack! She puts what she wants in it. Now, at 12 she packs quite well. But that is her only piece of carry-on. Only one time have we not checked our luggage. Way too much hassle.

It could count as either. For example I take on a knapsack (pretty large) and a computer case (also pretty large) as my personal item.

Your son could take his car seat as the luggage item and a kiddie backpack as the personal item.

If you have any questions check your airline's web site or give them a call before you go.
