Can I wear phone around neck to avoid bag check?

DH had a cellphone in a soft case hooked to his belt by a carabiner. He was NOT allowed to go through the no-bag line. It's a bag. Small, and with just the one item in it, but it's a bag.

I would just hold the phone in my hand, personally, with the other things hanging from a lanyard.

I carry a similar phone case, and my phone is big by huge . . . a Galaxy Note 3. Mine doesn't dangle from my belt, it is firmly attached, and I have NEVER had to go through bag check with it. The absolute ONLY time I've ever gone through bag check was when carrying my DSLR bag, which is a pretty good sized bag by any definition.

OP . . .just hang the phone case inside your sun dress, no one will know, or care, or ask. Basically, anything that is small enough to fit in a pocket goes into the park without a bit of question. I carry spare batteries for my phone, DSLR, a charger for the phone with cable, a mini tripod, a zip lock bag of splenda, clorox wipes, and god only knows what else in my pockets, as well as the phone case on my belt and have never been redirected to bag search.

This is what I bought for our Disney Trip. No problems going through the "no bag" line. Very comfortable to wear without something hanging off your neck. Also, water resistant.

I would really like to avoid bag check on our DHS SWW day. All I will need in the park is my MB, my cellphone, a CC, TIW card, AP card and some cash. I will be wearing a sundress without pockets. If I buy one of those around-the-neck cell phone cases that has some pockets for CC's, will that be ok to bypass bag check?

I was thinking of something like this, unless someone has some other suggestions?!

Thanks so much!

You can just hold it in your hand. It's not a bag.

could you just sew a pocket into the dress?
Maybe I will just give my DH my phone to carry. Wish my dress had pockets! It's a special dress for SWW so I'm not going to consider a new outfit at this point. We go to a WDW a lot, so I'm familiar with lines at bag check. I'm just expecting them to be a little longer on a SWW Saturday and was hoping to cut our wait time down. Thanks for your input!

I've used a wristlet for the last few years and always gone through bag check. Basically, it's only for my phone, ID, and (at the time) the KTTW card. On our very last day at a park on our last visit, the guard at AK checked it, rolled his eyes, and told me I didn't need to go through bag check for that.

Depends on the guard. I have made it through with a camera case, and I have been stopped and asked to go through the line.

Same here. Some guards are very thorough - I had one insist I open the tiny (maybe 2" long) decorative change purse on the zipper pull of our diaper bag when DD was little! - and others will wave things like cell phone cases or lanyard wallets through without checking.

That was my experience with the VB wristlet! They usually look at me like, "Why did you come through here, get in the park!!" but I like to air on the side of caution!! So to the OP, I think it really depends on the guard and the day. Since it's SWW like you said I might just stick it in a pocket or go straight to bag check. You will waste more time going through the no-bag and then maybe being told to get into the bag line. Also, I have worn dresses in the parks and while they may not be the most "practical" they can be great for DisneyBounding (which is what it sounds like you're doing) and they can be SO much cooler!! :)

Have fun!

We were just in WDW for a week, and bag check never added more than 20 seconds to our entry. We never had to wait on a line, whether we entered before/at RD, at 10am, 11am, 1pm, or later than that, nor did we have a different experience at any of the parks. I'd just go on the bag check line and catch up with anyone with me that didn't go through bag check.

While I believe that this was your experience; generally speaking it is not ours.
Bag check can be quick, but not always.

One thing I always advise carrying in summer months is water.

Also, while dresses may be cute, they are not generally my 1st choice for the parks. In short, shorts are just far more practical - unless you are going to a signature dinner/special event.

What will you do if it rains? In summer, almost every day carries risk of rain.

If you have a companion who is wearing men's cargo shorts, they are great!

Still, one more potential solution to your situation MIGHT be a clear zip lock bag - just for park entrance - where the guards can very clearly see EVERYTHING in the bag. Guards have allowed us to hold up gallon bags when our gallon bag was just full of water bottles.

Why the sundress? Why not something practical with pockets?

I bought a bunch of cargo shorts specifically to wear in the parks. I never had them before, but they are practical for theme park visits.

Simply because she wants to wear a sun dress I am thinking is the answer. My wife would find it quite amusing if I suggested she wear more practical clothes. Making sure her feet don't blister is the extent of her practicality when it comes to wardrobe. Looking and feeling good is her very next priority. I can't say I exactly mind. She looks good in a sun dress. :)

Yes yes yes. DW wore sun dresses much of our trip last summer. She was comfortable, and looked good (at least in my opinion, which is all that matters to me lol). Anything that needed carrying, I was more than happy to shove in the pockets of my cargo shorts, or my sons. It worked out well for all of us.

I was stopped and directed to bag check and all I had was an iphone in a Mickey zippered iPhone case so small. I think if you hold the phone with a simple case you will be fine.

Have you considered having a seamstress open the side seams of your dress and sew in two pockets? It's really easy to do.

I've told this story before but........Once during a Dec trip I was stopped at the no bag line and asked what was in my jacket pockets. One was empty and the other had an empty bag (like you buy to eat and stuff the bag in your pocket). Not sure why I was stopped.

But as others had said, some guards let things slide and some make you go to the bag line.

Mine doesn't dangle from my belt, it is firmly attached

Could they even see it?

If DH had tucked his more into his pocket it would have been fine, but they could see it between beltloop and pocket and he got to join me in line.

How does a sundress change anything in the rain?

I love wearing dresses at Disney parks. Wear some short running shorts underneath for chafing and modesty (while getting in and out of rides) and you're good to go! It's actually nicer than shorts, because if the shorts starts riding up it's all covered by the dress.

How does a sundress change anything in the rain?

I'm all for carrying a minimum amount of stuff. when it rains though, I usually feel the need to carry a jacket or rain poncho. So that's one more thing to carry, stash in a pocket, or wear (?all day?).
When it rains, in WDW, it often downpours- especially this half the year. For me, the need for a jacket + water is the difference between bag/no bag.

Another limit- for me is footwear. Some dresses are fine with sneakers, and some sandals work great with dresses. When it rains at WDW in the summer though, it REALLY pays to wear water tolerant footwear. Always, it pays to wear distance footwear. With Baggage fees, I limit shoes.

There are options, just mentally I don't usually pair 'cute sundress' and 'great walking shoes/rain tolerant footwear.'

I have worn dresses/skirts to dinner with post-dinner park touring, or skirt style cover ups to the pool. Most often though- if I bring anything with a skirt bottom it ends up coming home un-worn. Personally, I don't want to be in a situation where our park touring is limited by my outfit choice.

Along the same lines, I've gone to WDW with family that refused to carry water, then suffered (dehydration) sickness 3/4 the vacation. There's ways around that as well, but for me, carrying water is the most practical solution in summer months.

OP here. Thanks for all the responses!!

A few answers to some of the questions raised. Putting pockets in the sundress is a great idea! I'm going to take the dress to the tailor tomorrow and see what he can do.

I am not a practical cargo shorts kind of girl! LOL! In fact, I don't like short at all. We go to WDW a lot and I have an arsenal of comfortable, easy to pack sundresses and flip flops that I bring (yes I can walk in them all day). I love that I can throw them on and my outfit is done. I typically carry a le sportsac cross body that is roomy enough for all of our ponchos, water bottles etc.

I'm wearing a vintage 1970's Star Wars sundress for SWW. I found a few iPhone cases online that have a small pocket for bills and slots for 2 CC's, plus a wrist strap attached. That's all I need. I'm going to get one of those and have DH put it in his pocket. If we still have to go through bag check, that's fine, but I'll give it a shot.

Well if you don't want to be practical and still want to carry stuff then just get over it and go through the bag check. It takes like 30 seconds.

Nope - odds are good you'll be sent through bag check. I was sent through bag check with my little passporter pouch around my neck. Here's what it looks like: http://www.passporterstore.com/store/0966899437.aspx

The guard just laughed when I went through bag check and didn't even look through it but I still had to go through bag check. And it just happened again on my April 2015 trip too.

Seriously? Just tuck that inside your shirt.

I am not a seamstress at all, but have added pockets to cotton sundresses a ton, usually in a cute fabric of a different color. I don't wear shorts at wdw and really, only own one pair that's not for the gym, so I hear you on that and the shoes. You can be comfy and it's easy to pack. My short upcoming girls trip, is 3 park days with a mid afternoon arrival for pool. 6 sundresses (i like to change after afternoon break, a pair of pjs, 3 different shoes) and a nice dress for v&a. I have already packed because I'm only going to be home 1 night in the next 2 weeks. My stuff took up no room.

Your dress sounds adorable.

I also do the wristlet thing and either put it my pocket, dh's pocket if he's available, but lots of time I just hold it. Easy and I have my few essentials right there. Cash, cc, phone, Chapstick. Since we always take midday breaks. I reapply sunscreen at the hotel in between so need to lug it around. I see so many people with burns. I feel so bad for them.
