I currently have the iphone 4 with Verizon. February will be 2 years that i have it and my contract with them will be up.

Can i cancel my contract with them in Feb. when its up and keep my phone and use it with another carrier such as pageplus or another one of the smaller carriers?

thanks,

Lisa

The phone would have to be "unlocked". As it is right now, you can only use it on Verizon's network. There are a lot of people who can help you with this but don't expect the phone companies to be any help. They want to sell you a new phone and lock you into a contract.

You would also have to make sure that the new phone company is capable of communicating with the iphone. You can find a list of US and Canadian carriers here:

AT&T will unlock your iPhone after your 2-year contract is up. You just need to take it to their store. I don't know if Verizon unlocks though.

You just need to "unlock" it. There's a youtube video that will show you how to do that. My brother bought an iphone 4 off Ebay and unlocked it. Then he bought a sim card from ATT and uses the pay as you go plan.....

I can tell you that you cannot use a Verizon iPhone 4 on AT&T, because Verizon sells a CDMA phone and AT&T phones use GSM technology. Yes, your phone must be unlocked as well.

My wife is in the same boat -- she, too, has a VZW iPhone 4 with a contract ending in early 2013.

Unfortunately, your options will be few -- normally, you can move most any VZW phone over to Page Plus, but the folks at PP specifically state "no iPhones will be activated".

Also, since Verizon is a CDMA carrier, you can't move to Straight Talk, or any of the "budget" GSM carriers.

If you want to leave VZW after your contract is up, you could always sell your iPhone 4 on eBay, and get about (currently) $150--$200, if your phone is in good condition, and....

...jump to either Virgin Mobile or Cricket (since both prepaid carriers should be offering the iPhone 5 by February) -- of course, you would have to pay full retail price for a new handset compatible with either carrier, but the low monthly rates would recoup your costs over time. The Cricket iPhone is subject to availability in your local area...

Or, you could use the proceeds for your sold iPhone 4 and buy either a gently-used AT&T iPhone (or a unlocked GSM iPhone) from eBay and go the Straight Talk route.

Hope this helps...
