Can I Take This Stuff On The Plane??

OK, here's the situation...we are flying down to Orlando in a couple of weeks to do the closing on our new home we built there. :sunny: We will be staying in the house for a couple of days afterward to get a jump on paint, etc before we pack up and move down.

Here's the question...I will need to take a bunch of weird stuff with us on the flight down: drill, paint supplies, 2 cans spray paint, other misc tools, etc... Will they allow me to put this stuff in my checked luggage? Or is Security going to think I am some lunatic and pull all of my stuff out of the bag and make me leave it? I really need to take this stuff with us, so I do not have to buy duplicates when we are down there. We are flying out of DTW and you cannot see where they screen the checked bags like you can at MCO, so I am especially worried about this.

What do you all think? TIA!

The tools and such, yes. The paint, no. I would be more than leary of putting my power tools in my checked bag--my money is that you never see them again.

What I'd do is pack it up in a box (except the paint, don't think you can ship that period) and Fed Ex it to yourself at whatever hotel you'll be staying at.

There are Home Depots all over the greater Orlando, you can run in and buy the paint when you get there.

I agree with Anne. Ship it to yourself and avoid a lot of hassle. Don't ship any paint, etc.

There are plenty of Lowe's also and I am sure there will be one close to where you built your home.

Thanks guys. Not the info I was hoping for - but pretty much what I figured it would be. I am going to seriously consider shipping the drill - I think I'm really going to need it.

Thanks again!:sunny:

Sorcerormickey,
Congrats on the move. We just transferred down to Fl from MI as well. We love it.

DH came down before the kids and I and he packed all kinds of tools in his checked luggage. He didn't take any of his really expensive tools but he did take a decent drill. Thankfully, everything made it just fine. He had a one-way ticket and a bunch of tools in his luggage. I thought for sure that security would at least check his lugguge. Nope! Of course, when the kids and I flew down a month later, they went through our bag that only had clothing in it. Go figure.

You've probably already looked, but you might try the Transportation Security Admin web site. They have a link (if I remember right it's a PDF) of all the things allowed on a plane. That being said, I do think it would be better to ship it.

The website is www.tsa.gov.

Paint, paint thinners are not allowed as they are explosives.

Good luck with the house!
