I need help to make a long story short, we're going back to AT&T from Verizon. Our contract isn't up until the 28th of this month, BUT both of our phones literally fell apart within a week of eachother a few weeks ago - now we have no cells until the 28th. No biggie - we CAN survive a few weeks. LOL

BUT - the deal at Walmart is too amazing. Get a smartphone & new contract and get a $100 gift card. Some of the phones are under $100 so you actually make a little money just in time for Xmas. :goodvibes Unfortunatley that deal doesn't last until the 28th.

Can we switch over now, do the paperwork, pay the money & not activate the deal until the 28th? Anyone know how this might work for us. We'd like to keep our same numbers, otherwise we'd just switch right now!

Darn it - it may not work for me anyway. I see the deal (as most do) requires a minimum of $15 data plan per month. No Thank you! I get wireless almost everyplace I go and don't want to spend that extra money. Bummer.

If you don't mind my asking, why are you switching from Verizon to ATT? We have Alltel and they are being taken over by ATT so we were going to switch to Verizon. I'd like to gather more information before signing the Verizon contract. TIA

Alltel is Verizon and the take over pretty much already happened. We had Alltel and switched to Verizon when our contract was up to get my DHs employer discount that was offered with Verizon. All of our Alltel stores closed about a year ago.

If you switch to Verizon, you won't really see a difference. I have been just as happy with Verizon as I was with Alltel. Prior to Alltel, I had ATT and I didn't care for them. We had a lot of dropped calls and we live in the Cleveland area so it wasn't like I was in the middle of nowhere.

I guess we had better service with AT&T than Verizon. It's the same old arguement....some people must live in a little bubble where one is slightly better than the other. For us - it's AT&T. Also (no offense to anyone out there) we liked our customer svc with ATT, but find that the Verizon folks are snobby ---holes). Pardon my blanks.

If you get a smartphone, you have to have a data plan on it...if you don't want a data plan, just get a regular phone

I don't think you are going to find any smartphone with any cell provider that isn't going to require at least a minimal data plan.

When our contract was up last time, I waited until the day our contract was up to call about new phones. The lady on the phone said "Oh, you should have called earlier. We let you get new phones about 6 months before the contract is up." I was like :confused3. Oh well.

But, my point is, maybe you can get out of your contract earlier even if your contract ends on the 28th. Can't hurt to call and ask.

Alltel will be AT&T in our region and they will not complete the change over until January.

Verizon seems to have the better coverage out our way, which is why we were going to go with Verizon. I was just wondering what would be a good point for "staying" with AT&T.

I am get ready to confuse. If have ATT you can get a GSM unlocked phone and free wi-wi. Yes it can be done. Go to amazon.com click on unlocked phones. They is boatload them. I would hand my choice I would stick to Nokia because you can get the USA version instead of Euro version.

Good options that unlocked for ATT are
Nokia 5800
Nokia E63-Series
Nokia E72
Nokia E5
Nokia C3 unlocked
Nokia C3 pre-paid can bought at Wal-mart

If did not want to pay for data smartphone.

Or would get ATT call a feature phone and quick messaging get the 15 unlimted data plan. After that go to OperaMini download the Opera web broswer which is much better than ATT medianet.

Go site to is howardfourms. It cell phone fourm and has all kinds of tips.

I have LG Prime and I can pull up full websites with operamini4.2. Yes I know pay go phone but I got free. I need a quick replacement because I broken my phone.

I am going with the unpopluar angle. LOL I am not iphone4 or Driod fangirl.

I definitely agree with crazelion about the HowardForums tip - an excellent website for cell phone and provider information.

One item you will have to be careful on when selecting a phone for AT&T service - even if buying an unlocked one - make sure that it is not one that is already carried by AT&T as part of their phone line-up. If the phone you select is a smartphone and AT&T's system recognizes it as such their billing system will automatically add the smartphone data plan ! Most of the major carriers now do this so you have to be careful about what phones you choose, and just about any phone that is wi-fi capable is most likely going to be a smartphone. Check the AT&T forums at HowardForums - this has probably been asked and answered numerous times there.

I don't get it. Why wouldn't you activate immediately? :confused3

You do realize that no one cares if you have multiple contracts. At&T isn't giong to send Verizon a notice that you've switched to them.
As long as you aren't canceling a contract before the of the term it doesn't matter.
