Can I substitute a dessert or drink for an appetizer ?

Sometimes all three of us dont want dessert. Typically one of us gets dessert and we all share. So when we are on the Free Dining Plan this fall we want to know if we can subsitute a dessert or drink credit at a TS for an appetizer?

One of the hard and fast rules of the dining plan is you cannot trade a dessert entitlement for an appetizer. In May some changes to the TS credits were posted on various websites, but not officially announced by Disney. Some changes have been noted in the 2016 dining plan brochures, but whether a restaurant is already allowing any of the changes varies with the restaurant. Among the changes is an option to exchange dessert at a TS for something else which the restaurant chooses, perhaps soup, salad or a side dish. So far I have only seen one person post that they were successful. At The Wave they were offered a specific vegetable side dish in place of the dessert. You will not be able to choose an appetizer from the menu, but you might be given a different option at a Disney owned restaurant this year if you ask, but less likely at the third party restaurants.

I don't think it hurts to ask if you can sub a soup or side salad for the dessert, but so far the reports of this being successful are few and far between. We have been told this will be an option in 2016.

You won't know what your options for dessert substitution are until you go to the TS restaurant and ask your server. Expect it to be a small side salad, cup of soup, or some fruit/veggies if anything. I have seen no reports of being able to trade a beverage for anything else at a TS restaurant.

can I trade my QS beverage for a side or snack? I find that at our resort we already get a free refillabe mug so there is no need to get another beverage. So it's a waste.

That you should be able to do from what I've been told. This change is listed in the 2016 brochure, but is supposed to be in effect now. You can swap the beverage or dessert with QS meal for any snack credit item. However, many people do like to get a bottled beverage for later when using the refillable mug, so it doesn't have to be a waste.

Not for an appetizer, no. You can never trade anything for an appetizer.
