Can I sell my points back?

The problem was almost surely New Year's Eve, 12/31. That night is arguably the most demanded night of the year. Those who want to be sure of getting in for that night must book at 11 months. Often, even waitlisting doesn't work for that one night.

That's what I was thinking. If she's trying to make an all or nothing reservation or isn't aware she can split her attempt into parts 12/31 would do a great job of making it look like there is no availability.

If you didn't plan far enough in advance for those tough dates, don't give up yet! First call MS back and see if they can come up with a combo deal, split reservation, two studios, whatever. Ask them to help you figure it out. Most of the MS people are great and very creative, but if you think you happened across someone not willing to push for you, hang up and call back.

We've been members for seven wonderful years, and we rarely plan more than 4-5 months out. We've done wait list several time, and all but once, it worked out. Of course that one time was when we were wait-listed for NYE -- as stated above -- the hardest night of the year to book a room on property.

.....

I would think even local DVCers bo3ok that night so they don't have to drive home after partying up .

You usually do get beat up on the DVC boards when you:

1) Don't plan far enough ahead.

2) Don't have the flexibility to plan as far out as required.

I have lurked on this board for 2+ years and what I stated above is my opinion.

The supply & demand issues will never go away and will get worse with the addition of more DVC Resorts. Some day it will get to the point for the busies times of the year, that if you do not get your request within a week after your 11 month window then prepare a waitlist and pray it comes in.

You will get your best deal through a resale company not DVC.

My problem is that MS said I can not waitlist because of I'm using DP. We just became members in Aug. so the 7/11 could not have happened. So I'm calling them tomorrow and I'm going to try to book 2 regular rooms at a resort. I will have to use all of my developer points, but I don't care I've got 160 banked and I get 160 more in March so I'll still have enough for this year.
At least I'll be at Disney on New Years. I have always wanted to be there then.

Once Developer Points are out of the way booking should be much easier for you as long as you can book at the 11 month window for the busier times. We were lucky and bought in August but got the dates we wanted for this week at SSR using Developer points, but had to waitlist one night and borrow from next years points as you say rightly say Developer Points cannot be wait listed.

Hope you have a great time, we were at WDW last New Year and it was the best New Year ever :)

Claire ;)

I understand how you feel. I've owned DVC for about 3 years now and have found I have to book at the 11 month out period or forget it. I do own at BCV and they fill the quickest. I live all the way in Wa state and have to contend with flights and room availability. I do not go during the 'busy' seasons. I often wonder where these folks that call and 'get what they want' right away gets all their pixie dust. I love WDW and have just learned to plan a trip almost a year out and go with the flow. Good luck!

I think the DPs are a big reason for difficulty with some reservations right now. I am on a waitlist for any studio for Jan20-25th. Did not think that would be a sold out time. Could get rooms if willing to change every night and do a moderate in the middle but really don't want to be that flexible. It was only 4 months out when the waitlist was generated so that also plays into it. Last year I was able to get rooms at 4 months out for the 12/31-1/4 days so you just never know how things will work out. Am going to call back and modify the waitlist to day by day instead of the whole thing - maybe that will work better.

I too agree that the developer points are causing big problems. We've owned since 1999 and this is the first year we've encountered problems getting ressies. I can't wait until all the developer points have been used and that's over.

Hmm...

Somehow on FRIDAY (10/6) I got a room at OKW for 10/8 and 10/9.

Here are my thoughts as the Queen of late booking

1. Peak times. I don't try. The few times I am going that I KNOW are peak (one Christmas trip, one President's Day) I did have plenty of advance warning and booked far in advance. (President's Day I did the day by day) Did Christmas 10 months or so in advance.

2. Things I really want. I KNOW that every year I really want to stay at BC for Food and Wine. I don't do it 11 months in advance but generally before the 7 months window opens (probably by 9 months in advance) I book what I want. Never had an issue.

3. BE FLEXIBLE For this trip I called and said I will take any studio or one bedroom. Got a one bedroom at OKW. I actually wanted last night too, but it was booked so I stayed at a Courtyard.

I agree that if you want to book at very busy periods for both Disney and DVC then you have to plan in advance. I don't agree with the view on these boards that the addition of SSR had made it impossible to book late. I find it actually has made it easier. There are more rooms to book. (Contrary to DIS board myth "SSR" is not the "Root of all evil" with DVC LOL! Just wait until all those VAK owners start "stealing" your rooms OH MY! )

To the OP. Disney will not give you a fair price. Contact a broker!

Since this thread is about booking, availability and waitlist (developer points) I am moving it over to DVC Planning now. Thanks.

If Developer Points are causing problems now, will there be a similar problem when they start selling/closing the Kidani Village points, the GCV points AND the Hawaii DVC points? Will DP be offered for GCV and HV?

I think the biggest problem (more so than DP's) is when OP is trying to go. We all know there are a huge number of reservations made specifically during holiday periods by people that are extremely profit-minded. Chances are good that some of the these ressies will be cancelled @ the 45-day mark when they don't get high enough bids on various auction sites. I don't know too much about DP's, but could OP change to a DVC resort down the line if something opens up?

I'm sure the time the OP wants is their main issue. However, I'm having the same problems with the end of January. If I want SSR I can get a room, otherwise, all studios, 1 bedrooms, or 2 bedrooms are VERY hard to come by. We've never had this problem in the past.

Okay, so further confusing the matter with developer points is going to make things tougher. Don't give up on your membership after this one little snafu though. I can see how the use of DP's for those who are not yet well versed in how DVC works, could be VERY confusing.
