Can I just say one thing....

We also get points if we call in sick. Besides..if you get 5 or six colds a year and they all last a week, you'd be fired taking off that much time.

Everyone is always sick at work. We have to share the switchboard duties, and the germs just don't come off that stuff so easy, so it's just passed back and forth through everyone. In fact, the girl doing switchboard this week for breaks and lunch has a major cold and lost her voice. So next week the next person will get it.

Do Not come to work if you are sick......
I try not to, but since I got pregnant I'm catching every little sniffle DD brings home from daycare and then it magnifies until I feel like death, and I can't really take the usual stuff I'd take to feel better. I can't very well stay home for a week every month until the baby comes, so I trudge in and warn people not to get too close.

I have one!

DO NOT go to the gym if you are sick! Wiping your nose with your hand then putting said hand on the equipment is gross!

I agree with PP about calling out if you are working in the ICU. My mom was in the ICU 2 weeks ago and she had a sick nurse come into her room. Cmon, common sense says stay out of the room, especially if you know the patient just got done with chemo and has a non-existant immune system. :sad2:

I don't think nurses should show up at work sick either, but at the hospital I worked at, nurses were given a very hard time about taking sick days. You would think the administration wouldn't want to risk the nursing staff passing on viruses to the patients who were already sick, but all they cared about was having enough bodies to cover the shift. I think most people would rather stay home when they are sick, but if you want to keep your job, there isn't always that option.

Sorry, I'm another one who has to go to work if I'm sick. I work for a trial attorney and if there's a major trial coming up staying home is not an option (if I still want to have a job). Its a small office and there is no one to do my work if I'm out. I will say I have my own office, close the door, wash my hands frequently and spray with Lysol.

And please stop sending your child to school if he/she is sick.

Oh I second this! This is one of my biggest peeves. A few years back DD had a little girl in her class who had Strep (mom sent her anyway). She had a fever and went to the nurse. She told the nurse her brother was home from school and he had Strep. Nurse called mom and told her to come get girl. Mom says " Shes going to have to stay there and deal with it, I can't handle 2 kids at home sick at one time." Im not kidding. The nurse informed her that she had no choice, she had to come get her and please dont have her return until there was no fever for 24 hours. Nearly the whole class ended up getting sick. I know some people have issues with work/childcare but please if you child is sick do something. I have 2 home right now one who tested positive for the flu and one who I assume is going to test positive. The doctor told me she could go back as long as there was no fever. There has been no fever since Sunday but she still feels like crap and I cant make her go sit in a classroom all day like that.

Heh. I get sick pay but people get written up for using it. :confused3

I was 'verbally coached' twice for two seperate "incicdents" yet if I'd called off Friday it would have only been considered one incident and no coaching would have been needed.

My DH has the same system at work. They can take two days off and it counts as one incident, so if you call in sick for one day you might as well take two. However, you can only have two incidents in a 6 month period before you are reprimanded. If you have 3 then you are suspended without pay for a few days. He has plenty of sick time, but it's almost impossible to use it without getting written up. You're hesitant to call in sick for a second incident because what if you get really sick next month.

He often goes to work sick. He works in an OR, so obviously he shouldn't be around patients, but he really doesn't have a choice. There is not enough staff for all the surgery if people call in, plus we can't afford to have him get suspended. He wears a mask and a full hood, so the contact is fairly minimal, but still.

Say you have a cold, and it lasts a week - you really can't call in sick to work for 5 days for a cold. I couldn't do that at my job.

My DH can't/won't quit smoking. He gets sick at least twice in the winter and it the snot/coughing will often last for a month. He only calls in if he's vomiting... that's never a good thing during surgery.

For instance, I called off from work b/c of excruciating pain on a Thursday. Went to my OB, got drugs, felt so-so and went to work Friday.
Wound up in the ER with pain so bad I could barely breathe at 3am Friday. I didn't make it to work Saturday morning (clearly)...

Sounds like the "new" policy my job has just put in...I suffer from migraines, and never know when I wont be able to make it to work, or have to leave early. So I have to sign up for intermittent FMLA to prevent occurances from happening to me.

So if I'm supposed to stay home when I get a cold, and keep my DD home from school when she gets a cold, how many sick days a year does everyone thing I'm entitled to? An average cold lasts 7-10 days; it's just not possible. I'm sorry, but if I have a cold, or my daughter has a cold, it's off to work/school we go. Maybe SAHMs have the ability to stay home, but I certainly don't. If it's a fever, flu, strep, etc. of course we'd stay home, but definitely NOT for a common cold.

Aren't you contagious even before you start the sneezing and coughing. That is what I alwys heard - could be wrong.

Yes I also have gone to work sick during and audit - couldn't take off!

Sick is one thing, throwing up is another. Please don't come in saying that you've been throwing up all night.

Let me just add....do not send your child to school if they are sick.

I'll add to this one as well.

Do not send your child to daycare if they are sick. As a daycare provider, I've had parents give meds before coming and then act surprised when I call 4 hours later to tell them that Johnny has a fever of 101. Little do they know that Johnny told me that mom gave him medicine before they came.

I think you need to remember not everyone has sick pay. Some of are told either come to work sick or don't worry about coming back

See above comment. It stinks, it really does.

OMG! We finally got motivated to join a gym. Went everyday for two weeks then all 5 of us got strep. My youngest even developed scarlet fever. It took 4 months for all of us to get well.

I was home with pneumonia last week- this week there were a couple of people who seemed annoyed with me.:scared:
