Can I have aerosol spray in my luggage?

I have these travel size Lysol sprays that I plan on putting in my checked bags. They're only about 2.4oz. Would these be a problem or are no aerosols allowed?

No, aerosols, except for personal care (hair spray, spray deodorant are prohibited in luggage. Here is a link to the TSA website

I travel with those all the time. Have taken them with me on many trips. I just pop it in with my toiletries in my bag. I pack them in my ditty bag in my suitcase. They are very handy and a nice small size--intended for travel. They meet the criteria of limited quantity and personal use.

I don't think I would categorize Lysol as a personal care product, you don't spray it on yourself, do you?

That said if you brought a small travel size the TSA probably wouldn't care / or wouldn't even bother to see what the contents were. But if you bring the large can, then you might have a problem.

According to TSA rules, they are not allowed in either checked or carry-on luggage.

We all know, however, that what can get through and what is allowed, is not always the same thing!

So it's up to the user (and TSA, ultimately) to define what constitues personal care or toiletry item!

I've taken full-size aerosol hairspray in my carry-on with no questions asked, but that's obviously a personal care item. Personally, I'd take it, knowing in the back of my head that if it's questioned, they make confiscate it and/or do a more thorough search of other bags.

No, technically, they don't. Lysol is not meant to be applied to the human body, which is what the "personal care" criteria boils down to.

Lysol aerosol is not prohibited based on its size, but its chemical composition. It was on the FAA prohibited list long before the TSA liquid ban went into effect. Spray starch is on the same list.

No one is going to arrest you if you are carrying it, but if it is seen (in a carryon OR a checked bag), it will be confiscated.

I get it. The chemical components of Lysol are more harsh than something I would be able to put on my body, therefore making it a hazard.

When we flew to Orlando last summer, I guess we didnt think, and packed a 12oz aerosol sun-tan lotion in one of our checked suitcase. When we grabed the suitcase off the baggage belt after the flight, we noticed it was dripping, and had a strong smell of coconuts!
Well the lotion had apparently ruptured in flight and soaked all of the clothes in that suitcase with coconut sun-tan lotion.........it was a mess. Clothes and suicase were stained. Not sure if it was due to a pressure related issue or something else, but something to think about concerning all aerosol containers. Be careful what you pack !

The exception is not personal use it is personal care and lysol does not meet that criteria. It is a prohibited item.

I know exactly the cans you're talking about, because I bought two and brought them in my checked luggage back in October.

I had no idea they were prohibited. And, oddly enough, I had not one problem with them being in my luggage.

My traveling companions always laugh at me. I have all these little baggies, one marked "first aid kit", one marked "tooth care", one marked "nail care kit", "foot care", etc., etc., etc.

Well, don't you know, every time they said they needed something - lo and behold, I had it!
