These past few weeks, I've been recommending book after book for my 11-year-old cousin. He's been getting really into reading, but now I've run out of books for him to try--- just in time for the Christmas season

well, his mom asked me to make her a list of new books to buy him, and I've got nothing. so I came here for help.

Now, he likes horror books, but please keep in mind that he is only eleven- no steamy love scenes, please. He does, however, read at a high level, so adult and teen books are alright, so long as they're still somewhat appropriate

some books he's liked:

Soulless by Christopher Golden
Killing Britney by Sean Olin

thanks so much :goodvibes

Didn't they push the release date to January? I think they did it for the award season, I believe they are pushing for an Academy Award.

I honestly can't think of any books that I've read that are appropriate for an 11 year old. Sorry, I'll edit if I think of anything.

when i was that age i loved The Series of Unfortunate Events.

eta, there are like 11 of them, and its a really good read, but not "girly" ya know? like there's some action and mystery. i think boys would like them. the author wrote adult nonfiction for a long time before he wrote children's books, and he has a very large vocabulary, but he's really good about explaining what the words mean with context clues and stuff.

thank you very much for that link, i'm browsing through it now

i did try Lovely Bones, but i ended up reading just the beginning and the end. it wasn't for me, and i know it wouldnt be for a horror loving tween

i've heard about a lot of books that i haven't had time to get through yet- eg. Hunger Games, which is on my bookshelf right now. i just want to make sure that the novels i put on this list for him are appropriate. it's not gore i'm worried about, but graphic love scenes and such.

well.. when I was 11 I was reading at a very high and mature level.
you've probably heard of these but;;

Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr
Artemis Fowl
Cherub Series

There's 13. I like being precise lol. :goodvibes

I love those books! They are a bit dark, but I still like 'em. I looooove how he uses his large vocabulary. :thumbsup2

Series of Unfortunate events is good, I used to love those too.

If he likes Disney, maybe Peter and the Starcatchers or Kingdom Keepers?
Narnia is a good series, but more fantasy.

Hound of the Baskervilles is a really good book. It's a mystery, obviously it is a mystery with Sherlock Holmes.

I second this. I LOVED those books, and I loved Lemony Snicket's way of writing. They were easy (not in a bad way) and enjoyable to read, and barely ever did I think "wait, what's going on?".

I also liked Warriors. But those are about cats. They're awesome cats... but they're still cats. x.x

I would say, as someone else already said, peter and the star catchers. Also kingdom keepers. Those are great books.

When I was about that age I loved The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke. It's a really good book, I bet he'd like it. Series of Unfortunate Events (I WAS SO OBSESSED), as has been previously mentioned... City of Ember!! That's a great one. There was a movie a while back, but I didn't see it. The Giver. I loved The Giver. And Holes. From the Mixed-Up Files of Ms. Basil E. Frankweiler.. I totally just remembered that one. Artemis Fowl... I never really got in to. But some people did. Maybe The Hobbit... get him started on LOTR early xD

If they pushed it to January, it wouldn't be for awards. A movie has to premiere in Los Angeles by the end of December to be eligible for an Academy Award. December is when a lot of the heavy Oscar contenders are released.

The Lovely Bones is amazing. I just finished it last Monday. Not appropriate for an 11 year old though.

When I was 11 I read the Little House series. I also liked Anne of Green Gables and Harry Potter. Time Cat is another book that I enjoyed.

Oh yea sorry forgot Its for 11 i red books like lovely bones when i was 11 (most other kids didn't) XD I also read little house when i was 5-7

The hobbit is a good one for an 11 year old i just thought of that.

thanks so much for any suggestions people have made. i ended up with a semi-decent list for him

I am currently subbing in a gr 5 class and this series is very popular as is the Inkheart series. My kids just saw the previews for the first Percy Jackson movie which will come out in Feb. They want to start reading book 1 now so that they will be ready for the movie.
