Can I change my tickets after I have made a reservation?

If we make a reservation with hoppers, can we later change the tickets to non-hoppers? Before we pay off the whole package, I mean.

I am planning to book a September trip with hoppers, so that possibly I can add free dining when/if that comes out. If free dining does not come out, then I would want to go to base tickets and save the $320 toward food.

For an example, I had actually paid my package in full, but reduced my ticket from 8 days to 6 days or something like that. They promptly refunded the amount on my credit card. So don't worry even if you have paid off the package, they got your back as long as it's over 30 days before the trip IIRC.

But if you book before a price increase and change it after, your new price will be the increased ticket price.

And free dining generally means paying full price for the room so it can be a trade off. Not always useful for people.

Isn't there a $50.00 change fee on packages, if the price goes down?

Do you have to purchase hoppers to get free dining?

Depends on the "minimum tickets" requirement at the time of the promotion.
Recently, "2-Day Hoppers" have usually been the "minimum tickets."

Ah, dang, forgot about that. Do I make 2 reservations, one with and one without hoppers? Argh.

We had 2 day base tickets and I just called Disney and asked them to change it to 3 day hopper tickets. It cost more but we think it will make our trip more enjoyable.

If you want book "Free" Dining (if it comes along,) you'd have to completely re-book the reservation, anyway.
So, there's no advantage in booking unwanted tickets "now" in anticipation.

Just book the tickets now that you intend to actually use.

This.

And, the more rooms that are booked in anticipation of getting free dining, the less reason Disney has to offer free dining, because as far as they're concerned, rooms are full and they don't need to lure people in.

It won't make any difference. No matter what you book now, if you then modify it to a free dining package you will be subject to any new ticket pricing. The only way to "game" this is to book exactly what you want prior to the ticket price increase and not change it. If free dining comes along, of course, price it out, but you may end up with a better deal if you simply lock in the current ticket pricing and don't play around with your reservation.
