Can I change my plans if a family member can’t travel but the rest of us still want to go?

DH, DS(26)and I were planning a visit to WDW in September. We booked a two-bedroom at Kidani because we like all the space. (DS is quite tall and doesn’t sleep comfortably on a sleeper sofa.) When I reserved this vacation, DS was unemployed because of the pandemic. He’s been vaccinated, started looking for work and I have a feeling he’s not going to be available for a family vacation in September. So I have two questions: 1. Is there a way to cancel his theme park pass and get a refund or is it non-refundable, but he can use it next time he visits WDW? 2. With a booking through the Disney Vacation Store, is there a way to alter the reservation to a one bedroom? I know there’s no refund, but I think the terms say I can get credit if I cancel before mid-May. Does anyone know how this would work? Thanks!

Tickets are usually non-refundable (some authorized ticket resellers will refund under specific conditions but will charge a re-stocking fee) and will expire, but the value remains attached to your MDE account and can be applied to a future ticket purchase. Keep the confirmation number/ticket number because it will disappear from your account although Disney will be able to see it.

I don't know anything about the Disney Vacation Store, but if they're a middleman for renting from a DVC owner, you need to contact them. Different rental agencies have different policies, plus the DVC owner has certain restraints on what they can and can't do (for instance, there might not be any 1BR available for your dates).

Park reservations can be canceled without a problem. Theme park tickets are non-refundable. In order to be used the next time that he visits, the ticket's dates need to be changed and any additional money due to the price difference needs to be paid. The ricket itself never loses its value.

I'm not sure who Disney Vacation Store is but if you rented points, then all of the brokers have a no refunds policy. Read your rental agreement to see how your broker will handle it. If they permit you to cancel and re-book for a smaller unit, it is unlikely that they will refund the difference in price. They may also have difficulty finding a villa at the same resort. DVC availability for the fall is extremely limited at this point.

Thanks, everyone. This is what their website says. I’ve emailed to ask about my particular situation, but it seems like I should be able to get a credit for my deposit to put towards a smaller DVC unit. I kind of thought his park pass would not be refundable. I’ve just never cancelled a park pass before, so I wasn’t 100% sure.

Great news! All DVC Rental Store reservations now come with a built in cancellation policy to give you added peace of mind should unforeseeable circumstances interfere with your vacation plans. The Stress-Free Cancellation Policy issues credits you can use toward a future DVC rental. You can utilize these credits up to two years from the original travel dates. The amount of your credit is based on the tiers below.

120-61 Days75% of total reservation price*

Just a thought- My family members have been through various jobs over the years. After they get the job offer, during negotiations, they will say if they have a 'family vacation' already planned. It has always been fine with the employers. He may or may not get paid for this time. Employers realize that people have things planned in advance. (I would still plan a cancellable option.)

One time I thought it wouldn't work out because my son had training that week, at a large corporation. They told him he could do the training later.

It will depend on whether there is availability to change from a two bedroom to a one bedroom too. otherwise, enjoy the extra space

I think as long as that the ticket is unused, it can be transferred/reassigned to another person in MDE. And the value of a unused expired ticket can be used toward a ticket at a later date, by paying the difference in price.
