Can I buy a memory card...

Hi All,

I'm new to this digital photography stuff, and very nervous about losing photos, not having enough memory, etc. I know one option is to bring a lap top and another is to tranfer images to a CD at WDW, and of course I can bring an extra memory card, but here's my question -- in case something goes wrong with one of my memory cards or something ---

Is there anywhere in WDW where I can purchase another memory card? With film cameras, you can purchase film, batteries, and entire disposable cameras. I imagine eventually memory cards will become readily available at tourist spots....but are they available now?

Just curious and nervous.....

Thanks!

You may want to go offsite to a WalMart or Target if you decide when you get to WDW you want another memory card.

Personally I would look at the sales before you leave home and buy your extra memory cards at home.

We had a few memory cards AND our lap top. I took over 600 pictures on our trip and I set our quality at the finest and just transferred our pictures in the evening while at the resort.

I would hazard to guess that a memory card at WDW would be extremely costly. Buy a card at home before you leave if that is what you want to do or off site when you get to Orlando.

Thanks. It makes sense to stock up on a few extras before hand, especially with sales, but I just get nervous about things that can go wrong sometimes. Knowing Walmart is available off-site in the unlikely event that I would need more memory makes me feel much better!

Thanks again.

In addition to looking at the local promotions from Best Buy, Circuit City, etc... I would recommend looking at sterlingtek.com. Gail Hayden is one of our fellow DISer's with alot of photography experience. She recommended this site to me recently, as they tend to give their cards a lifetime guarantee! We will definitely be buying from them, because I've heard too many horror stories of peoples cards going bad & they are out all of that $$$...

Good luck! :D

I saw some of them for sale at the Exposition Hall at MK ... I don't remember the prices, but they weren't cheap. They had SD, CF and Sony Memory Sticks. If you can pick up a couple before you go, you will save some money.

I bought mine last year in the little shop next to AK stroller rental. Paid double what I paid at home.

If you have a Staples near you, I jsut got a great deal a 256 card for $49.94 after rebate.

Good luck
Sandy

Are these safe to buy on ebay? I'm new at this too so I'm not sure what to do either. The one story I remember about the cards and WDW is that the woman paid a lot of money for costumes for her daughter then lost all her pictures when she transferred them to a CD at WDW. What could she have done to have prevented this from happening if she didn't have a laptop to check the CD with before she deleted all her photos from her card? I too love to take a lot of pictures but I think the only time I'll need extra cards would be trips to WDW which is once every two years. I suppose we could buy the cards at WalMart at home and not open them unless we needed them. Is there a Digital Camera 101 course on the internet anywhere?!:D

If you watch the stores in your area you will get a better deal than you can get on the internet. Sure you can buy them and return them but it is a good idea to spread out your picture taking on several cards. That way if something happens to one you haven't lost all your images.

Also by having more cards than you may need you don't have to erase them till you get home if you don't have a laptop. Then if they are erased you have no one to blame but yourself.

eBay prices on these type of items are not too good. Add shipping and it'll be more costly than going to a store.

I'm planning to buy a couple more CF-cards and not even opening the package. If it turns out that I don't need the extra ones, I don't have to open it and I can return it (them) to the store I bought them.

ps: Im planning to take four 256Mb CF cards, btw.

I'm paranoid about losing my pics and/or not having enough memory, so I travel well prepared. I have 4 128 memory sticks, one 16 and one 32 and two extra batteries for my Sony, and 2 256 flash cards and an extra battery for my Cannon.

I do not have a lap top yet, so I do not transfer any of my pics until I get home.

Personally, I like a good deal and all, but I prefer to buy my memory new (not E-bay) from a reputable dealer. Just my own piece of mind I guess.

Hope you find something that's right for you! :D

I do not have a laptop but is there somewhere I can transfer my card to a cd within the world? I bought an additional card but still would like to know.

We will be staying at the Contemporary if that makes any difference.

Yes, at the camera shop on Main Street in the MK. And, somewhere near the Imagination area of Epcot. I've heard about these from other threads, so there could be more I just don't know about!

I guess I didn't even think of searching for this answer. I'll do that now!

Thanks again!
3 days to go ... and counting every minute!

Thanks for all the replies. I am very glad to hear they have them available at WDW, even at double the price  -- but I will definitely stock up and not plan on buying any there -- it just feels good to know I *could* if I *had* to.

I'm new to this, but I agee that I would rather use several cards and just transfer them at home - where I am *reasonably certain* nothing will go wrong.

I buy tons of things on E-bay, but personally I wouldn't buy a memory card from there. They are too fragile, too many things could go wrong with a card, and photos are way too important to me. JMO.

Thanks again. I'm having tons of fun with my new camera at home....can't wait to use it at WDW!!

(Off topic...wooo hooo...I'm over 500 posts now!!)

Yes, they are *available* but they are expensive!

For our honeymoon, we didn't plan ahead enough to buy a card with all the wedding craziness. After getting to FL, we tried a couple of off-property stores (Walmart, Walgreens) and they were out of stock. We ended up purchasing one at Epcot's camera shop for about $30 more than we would have spent at Walmart. But it was worth it when it became our last option.

Have fun with your new camera! :smooth:

No way am I an expert on digital cameras/photography, but when we bought our digital camera a couple of years ago, the salesman urged us to buy two sets of rechargeable batteries and a charger. We did and haven't regretted it. With average usage, I can easily get one or two days camera use on a set of batteries, change to the second set and recharge overnight with the plug in charger. Over all, I think it has saved us $$$.

I find the best deals on memory at Fry's if you have one near you. If not, they have an online store. Checking the sales at Best Buy, Circuit City and the office supply stores may save even more with rebates.

I love, love, love Zurg's tips page! It's just what I needed! Thanks!!!:D
