Can I bring a beach umbrella??

No need to be sorry. We are all just giving our opinions and they differ thats normal. Just saying people have reasons for doing things. Trying to put myself in other peoples shoes. People with illnesses, disablilities etcpopcorn::

If you chose to get off the ship to do the 5K then you are choosing to not have first pick at space, loungers, hammocks, chairs, umbrella's on the beach.
Surely you can't then say "well I was running the 5k and I like that spot in front of you and I've brought my own umbrella to shade me" then say "I need this umbrella because I'm susceptible to skin cancer" so regardless of you getting here earlier, "I like to have my feet in the water", so my umbrella is OK?

If a physically disabled Guest was helped to the beach and then sat in front of me as they got there later due to the extra time needed to debark and get there I would offer them my spot if they wanted it.

It's a choice between a prime spot and a 5k run IMO.
And if baddog576 had shown some more consideration and regard for other Guests.....

I find a lot of your posts on this board quite condescending.

I do consider other people's opinions or I wouldn't have posted this and asked that particular question. OK, so I can get off the boat at 9am, pitch my umbrella at water's edge before others come behind me with my chairs and leave my stuff and run for 30 min and be OK? I don't go back to ship after. Then people who come after will know what they are getting into? I thought that was unacceptable to do (chair hog).

Let me ask this then. If I do bring an umbrella and pitch it there before anyone is there and STAY would that be OK? I could forgo my run I suppose if this scenario is more palatable.

Bring it. Set it up at the end of the family beach. You wouldn't be the first. It's a lose lose situation. If you chair hog, you lose, if you bring you're own and plop it right in front in the middle of the beach you lose. Just take it down to the end of the family beach and I doubt anyone would hardly notice. Or notice and think, "why didn't I bring an umbrella". ;) You never said you were going to be inconsiderate. I wanted to bring my favorite Newport Beach beach chair and make my hubby carry it on for all our beach excursions (it has shoulder straps). I've seen some people bring their own chairs too.

just also be aware that sitting in the shade of an umbrella on any beach does not offer protection from sun damage or skin cancer. Those ultra-violet rays are bouncing off the water and the sand and reflecting on to you even while in the shade. You might feel a little cooler under the shade of an umbrella, but it really is of little protection ..... use lots of sunscreen and re-apply often.

More so than obstructing the view of other cruisers, I'd be concerned with blocking the view of the lifeguards.

Exactly, while you may see umbrellas all over the US beaches, if it has a lifeguard you are not allowed to place your umbrella closer than the lifegaurd stand/chair, they must all be even or behind his stand.

I don't see it on the list, but that doesn't mean DCL won't take it away before you board and give it back when the cruise is over. In order to maintain a safe and secure environment for our Guests and crew, the following are examples of items that Guests are not allowed to bring on board. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found.

Weapons and firearms (including ammunition, knives—including dive knives—swords, daggers or any other types of weapons) are not allowed onboard under any circumstances
Realistic replicas of firearms and weapons
Highly flammable liquids and combustible substances
Non prescribed controlled substances, illegal drugs, medically prescribed and synthetic marijuana
Power Tools and Tool boxes (except those tools of the trade utilized by vendors providing services)
Sporting equipment (i.e., baseball and cricket bats, hockey and lacrosse sticks, pool cues, ski poles, fishing gear and archery equipment.)
SCUBA equipment (i.e., tanks, spears guns /slings, dive knives, pry bar, and underwater scooter)
Kites, balloons, surfboards, wave boards, inflatable floats/pools (including pool noodles), and wagons
Bicycles, Segways, skateboards, inline & roller skates, any footwear with wheels, (i.e. Heely's type shoes)
Electrical appliances such as rice cookers, hot plates, coffee makers, electric irons, bottle sterilizer and bottle warmers, etc. Please note: A limited number of approved bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers are available upon request through Guest Services. Also all ships offer laundry facilities with irons and ironing boards. Valet laundry service is also available for a nominal fee.
Candles & Incense
DVD, VCR, or Blu ray players or, Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo Wii gaming systems are not allowed because of compatibility issues with the stateroom TVs
Musical instruments
Large Ice Coolers (Please note: small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 12" x 12" x 12" brought onboard for the purpose of housing medications are permitted as carry-on luggage.) Homemade, pre-cooked or other perishable food items plus any open snack containers
Metal detectors are not allowed on the ship or on Castaway Cay, as any object found using thesedevices would need to be returned to the owner or donated to charity
Personal fireworks or pyrotechnics
Seasonal and celebratory lighting strings
Liquid oxygen

Wow I had no idea I should read the website more closely. Couple things I wanted to note on this:

Waveboards- Last year when we were going on the Dream we had DD's bodyboard (the short like 2 1/2 foot longish board) in the back of our car and the porters asked if we wanted to check that and bring it along with us. So we didn't think anything of it and said sure if we can. Our stateroom host even left it in our room as opposed to in the hallway for us. We took it with us to CC where before we went out to island we asked guest services if we could take it with us and she floated around on it in the lagoon and no one said anything to us- doesn't mean it was right but we asked and we didn't bother anyone with the float. I would also note I wouldn't bring it again as it is a pain in the butt to carry all kinds of crap with us.

Inflatable floats- we have spring float chairs we asked if we could bring with us on the boat in our checked luggage for use in St John and CC I showed guest services on the Dream and asked over the phone and we were told it was ok as long as it wasn't a regulary blow up float didn't take room. But since you have posted this I am going to call again just to make sure. These fit into my beach bag super easy along with other beach items we have taken with us (foam water shooters, sand castle building things etc) I liked the umbrella someone said clipped on the chair I wouldn't personally bring it since there have always been chairs with umbrellas available (maybe not where we liked)

Cooler 12x12x12- We have a rolling collapsable cooler that is probably about 36 inches tall 8 inches deep and 24 inches wide (kinda looks like a captains bag carry on) we called before we left and asked if this was ok, I have reconfirmed this probably like a month ago as well. It's on wheels and is ok to take with us on the ship since it is soft sided and can collapse this is the key!!! I have recently bought a picnic basket lunch cooler that collapses as well and was told this is ok to bring on whether I hand carry it or put it in my luggage.

The key to bringing anything is common sense - is using it going to cause an issue, are you going to be safe and are you going to impede on another guest

I don't know about this. All the beaches we go to around here the lifeguard stands are right up near the dunes (as far as you can get from the water and still be on the sand). This means that all umbrellas are in front of the lifeguard. It doesn't really matter though because the stand is raised on a platform so they can see above and beyond.

At CC, aren't the lifeguards on platforms actually in the water?

My opinion is that if you want shade/need shade then you need to get there early to ensure you get an umbrella. And no I'm not endorsing "chair hogging" and then going off to do your run. Or take your umbrella and pitch it where it will not obstruct anyones view.

If you want to sit with your feet in the water for a while (after your run) then maybe take a chair down to the waters edge with a sun hat and coverup?

Baddog, I may have an option for you. I have run the 5K more than 50 times at CC and no longer wait for the group run because by the time they start during the summer months, it is getting very hot.

What I do is be one of the first ones off the ship and get right out to the beginning of the 5K run and just run it by myself. I am normally done before the official run starts and there are less than 20 people on the beach at Pelican Point.

This assumes you know the course. But by doing this it is hardly chair hogging when there are more than 100 chairs available by the time you are done. Just my 2 cents.

So do you go down and register for it and then go out and run it?

Have you run it since they made the changes this spring???

I ran it once since they made the changes. I ran the new course, got the certificate and the medal.

Since I did it the one time, I don't go and register any longer. I just go and run it by myself now.. guess I run it to stay in shape on the cruise not so much the stuff they do for it.

Thanks for the info I think for me we have our favorite spot on the island which luckily for us is not super popular as it of course not crowded last year either. Since it is important to get our spot we like DH said he will go and get our seat while I run.

And no we are not chair hogs or saving seats etc.. we normally get one hammock and one long chair for the 3 of us.

Sounds like a plan.. My son and I love the hammocks also.
