I know this will sound strange but I don't like sitting in the sun and when we went to CC in March it was hard to find a beach chair with shade. They had some near small trees and some umbrellas but by the time we were done with our 5K run they were all taken.

We like to sit right along the water line with our feet in the water but I still like to have shade for myself and kids. I didn't see that as a prohibitive item. Are you allowed to bring them? I don't remember if I saw any last time.

Would you be upset if someone put up an umbrella close to the water possibly obstructing your view (happens all the time at beaches here). I don't want to cause problems but I also don't want to bake in the sun. :cool1:

Yes I would:thumbsup2

I don't see it on the list, but that doesn't mean DCL won't take it away before you board and give it back when the cruise is over.

In order to maintain a safe and secure environment for our Guests and crew, the following are examples of items that Guests are not allowed to bring on board. These and other similar items will be confiscated upon being found.

Weapons and firearms (including ammunition, knives—including dive knives—swords, daggers or any other types of weapons) are not allowed onboard under any circumstances
Realistic replicas of firearms and weapons
Highly flammable liquids and combustible substances
Non prescribed controlled substances, illegal drugs, medically prescribed and synthetic marijuana
Power Tools and Tool boxes (except those tools of the trade utilized by vendors providing services)
Sporting equipment (i.e., baseball and cricket bats, hockey and lacrosse sticks, pool cues, ski poles, fishing gear and archery equipment.)
SCUBA equipment (i.e., tanks, spears guns /slings, dive knives, pry bar, and underwater scooter)
Kites, balloons, surfboards, wave boards, inflatable floats/pools (including pool noodles), and wagons
Bicycles, Segways, skateboards, inline & roller skates, any footwear with wheels, (i.e. Heely's type shoes)
Electrical appliances such as rice cookers, hot plates, coffee makers, electric irons, bottle sterilizer and bottle warmers, etc. Please note: A limited number of approved bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers are available upon request through Guest Services. Also all ships offer laundry facilities with irons and ironing boards. Valet laundry service is also available for a nominal fee.
Candles & Incense
DVD, VCR, or Blu ray players or, Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo Wii gaming systems are not allowed because of compatibility issues with the stateroom TVs
Musical instruments
Large Ice Coolers (Please note: small, personal-sized coolers, no larger than 12" x 12" x 12" brought onboard for the purpose of housing medications are permitted as carry-on luggage.)
Homemade, pre-cooked or other perishable food items plus any open snack containers
Metal detectors are not allowed on the ship or on Castaway Cay, as any object found using thesedevices would need to be returned to the owner or donated to charity
Personal fireworks or pyrotechnics
Seasonal and celebratory lighting strings
Liquid oxygen

I would think that "a few" people might be a little peeved that you thought of it and they didn't, but as it's not on the prohibited list there doesn't seem to be any reason you can't.

BUT, TWO BIG BUTS,

Firstly I would call DCL and check with them, but more importantly I would try to choose a spot away from others so that you do not block and spoil the enjoyment of others that have found there perfect island spot for the day expecting to have clear views to the ocean and you not turn up later and cut in with yours and spoil theirs.
If your considerate to the other's around you, I personally wouldn't mind, but if you come along and pitch your own umbrella right in front of me and block my view and sun, I would ask you to move to somewhere else.
Others may not be so polite! :scared1: lol!

An umbrella set up close to the water line would block the line-of-vision of parents watching their children in the water. The family beach area is shallow for quite a ways out and without the danger of riptides we have always sat in our chair or lounger and watched the kids from there, especially now that they are 11 & 13, but I still like to keep an eye on them when they are in the water because you never know what could happen. If someone moves a chair closer to the water, you can still see the kids in the water but I am thinking that an umbrella would obstruct that view. Just what I thought of when imagining this occuring.

The best reason NOT to bring one.

OK.... but go to ANY beach in FL (or anywhere for that matter) and you'll see hundreds of beach umbrellas up and down the shore. Are all those people rude and inconsiderate of your view? I mean if your children are in the water and you are concerned shouldn't you be near in the water watching them rather than further away lounging on a beach chair where the umbrellas are? If you were then my umbrella wouldn't bother you. I use the umbrella so me and my kids aren't frying in the sun all day.

I didn't mean to start a debate but I also don't want to be a 'chair hog' and save shaded seats before our 5K run either so I wanted to see if I should provide my own shade for my safety (I don't want skin cancer 20 years down the road).

I neither want to start a debate, but just want to say that your not on a public FL beach when at CC so that is not comparable IMO.

So as I said before if you do bring your own, if you are courteous to those around you you might not have a issue.
But at the same time if you want a spot where your feet are in the water all day under a DCL CC umbrella, it is unlikely anyway even if you are first off the ship. Tides.

Maybe you could compromise and let the kids enjoy some in the club/lab CC spaces to have fun whilst you and your partner enjoy some time at Serenity Bay with your feet in the water, (move the lounger's and chairs to the shore line) then the other time with your kids either sat further back on the available loungers and shaded areas with or without your umbrella?

Just a thought and remember to cover up and put on LOTS of sunblock on the 5K.
Even when overcast you can burn so easily without even realizing when the sun is not out.

it would bother me a bit,, but I saw someone w a personal umbrella far back on the beach,, it wasn't ubstructing anyone. I guess DCL is ok w it, but might not hurt to check

We live on the beach in NC and if my kids are in the water at all here DH or I are right there with them due to the danger of a riptide and the fact that with shifting sandbars it can get deep fairly quickly - probably similar to FL beaches. That is what I like about CC the most. With the protective barrier you don't have that danger and it is quite shallow for a ways out. We have never seen a wave at CC. I stress out at the beach here due to having to be on constant alert. I enjoy CC because I can relax more. The kids can play on the floats and be in waistdeep water. I do keep an eye on them because accidents can happen anywhere. I don't move a chair up to the edge of the water anymore so parents of younger kids have the space to do so without it being too crowded for kids to get to the water or build a sand castle on the beach.

Have you considered bringing one of those collapsible sun shade/shelters and setting it up further back? You said you wanted the shade for the kids so you could set that up as a "homebase" further back on the beach and simply walk down to enjoy the water intermittently throughout the day. Seems like that might be a good compromise for all involved.

I have been to hundreds of beaches (every Hawaiian island, eastern, western and souther Carb. ports numerous times,American Somoa,Truk,Guam, Australia and the count goes on I was at Cocoa beach last year for 4 days) in my life time and have never seen people setting up a umbrella at the waters edge. I am not saying that it does not happen just never seen it. Enjoy your cruise.:)

Bring a tiny collapsible umbrella (totes) or buy one that attaches to a chair. One tiny umbrella won't block anyones view. :confused3

Especially important for anyone with skin cancer or melanoma. I have inlaws that have to be under a tent or umbrella. They can be totally covered with sunscreen and clothes and still have gotten burned and had many precancerous lesions removed and worse. They have to be careful. An umbrella isn't bad. I have had sand tossed on me and my things by little kids and been hit with a football :mad:It would't bother me to take an umbrella any day. (ps ever wait for the fireworks or parade only to have Dad put the kid on his shoulders) I just move and would move over if someone was blocking my view.

People don't know and neither do we why people are using an umbrella or other implements at the beach.

A small umbrella like that would be different. When someone talks about toting a beach umbrella I picture something the size of those on CC.

Completely agree, but susceptibility to skin cancer isn't a reason to bring your own umbrella after running the 5K in the blazing sun and then set up camp at the waters edge (with feet in the water) after you have done your run, whilst everyone else who chose to find the prime spots (feet in the water) chose their spot and now you want to sit in front of them.

Sorry,

Ex Techie :)

I totally need the shade too but please don't set up an umbrella at the waters edge. Like the previous poster I have been to many beaches and currently live in FL and have never seen an umbrella set up that close to water....

I would rather you be a chair hog for a 1/2 hr while you run the 5k!

I'm not wearing a swim suit running. I have a shirt and it's 30 min. Sitting on the beach in the direct sun for several hours is different.

I'm not sitting in front of people who are at water's edge. When we went in March there were a bunch of lounge chairs some with umbrellas way back on the beach. We saw some people take those short chairs and sit along the edge of the water and we sat near them to the side, not in front of them. No one was behind us, if there were, they were probably at least 30 or so feet away up where the lounge chairs were.

BTW, this is over near Pelican's Plunge, not sure what people were doing on the other beaches (ie, water's edge was packed with people). PP beach didn't seem that crowded to me except for the tiny areas that had some shade and people were congregating to those spots.

No need to be sorry. We are all just giving our opinions and they differ thats normal. Just saying people have reasons for doing things. Trying to put myself in other peoples shoes. People with illnesses, disablilities etcpopcorn::

So those 30 feet behind you will have their view that they picked out obstructed by your umbrella for your sole benefit.
You could sit back 30 feet from the waters edge with your umbrella and not block anyones view, but that 30 feet will vary depending on the Tide.(obviously)
I did mention that before.
Also I mentioned that you probably wouldn't have an issue with other Guests if you were considerate about your positioning.

But it is really a case of you want to go on your run, then get the prime spot later.

I wish you luck on your run, and all the best on the cruise, and on CC

But please step back and think about those that maybe have sat on the beach with a picture perfect 30 foot clear view of the shore line and sea, and then after your run you go back to the ship, collect your umbrella from your Stateroom (you can't just drop it off somewhere and pick it up later) and then decide that the best place to stake a claim is in front of their view without protest. (skin cancer susceptible or not)

Just be conscious and courteous. (and I only say that as you seem to be unwilling to recognize all sides of the situation)
