I know you can borrow points from the next UY year, but what about this:

UY--August
In January 2008, can I borrow points from my Aug 09 allotment to use for a December 2008 reservatoin. I know by the time Dec 08 rolls around, I could borrow from Aug 09, but what about making reservation before I get to my next UY (Aug 2008)?

You do not need to borrow points to make that reservation unless you do not have enough points for it.

MS will use the points that you will receive on August 1, 2008 for your December 2008 vacation, using any previously banked points first. If they run out of points, you can tell them to borrow from the next UY to make up the difference.

thinking of booking a 2 BR for the extended family over Christmas 2008--b/c it's holiday season, I would need more points than would be in my account from 2007 points and from upcoming UY 2008 points---so I would have to borrow from UY2009 to get the week----so, would MS let me borrow from Aug 2009 UY in Jan 2008 to make a Dec 2008 reservation?
I was thinking that I could not borrow AUG 09 points until after Aug 08 (which would be too late to get a Christmas 2008 reservation)--we could still go, just not as long without borrowing form 09. Thanks, Elaine

If I understand you correctly you wouldn't be able to. Some one correct me if I am wrong...
AugUY you are in the 07 UY now
Jan 2008 would still be the 07 UY....so you could borrow from 08UY points not 09. In January 09 you could because at that time you would be in your 08 UY and could borrow 09 UY points.

UY is like a company Fiscal Year.......not a calendar year.

I certainly don't consider myself an expert but I just made my very first DVC reservation for next May (2008) using banked 2006 points, my 2007 points and borrowed 2008 points. Our UY is December. I understand that as long as you have passed your UY anniversary by the time of your reservation (in your case in August of 2008 you could borrow your 09 points), you can make the reservation. It's certainly worth a call to MS to confirm. I think you can do it! Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful vacation!!

thanks--I'll call MS--but thought I'd get the skinny from DVCers first.

wrong. you can't borrow '08 points because the reservation in Dec '08 is already in the '08 user year for the OP. You could borrow '09 points for a Dec' 08 reservation.

The real answer is it makes no difference as to when you make the reservation as to if you can borrow or not. What is important is the date of the trip. So if the trip is during your 08 year (which Dec 08 will be if you have an August use year), then you will be able to use banked points from your 07 year, current points from your 08 and borrow point from your 09 year. And yes, you will be able to do this at the 11 month mark (i.e. Jan 08) at your home resort.

Good luck on getting your reservation.

All you need to do is look at when you want to go. If you don't have enough points in your use year at the time you want to go, you'll need to borrow from the next use year.

For example.

You want to go Dec 08. You have an Aug UY. You need points for that Dec 08 reservation. You would use any banked points from Aug 07 (8/1/07-7/31/08), any current points from Aug 08 (8/1/08 - 7/31/09) and any borrowed points from Aug 09 (8/1/09-7/31/10).

That's great--that gives us a lot more points to work with at the 11 mth window!!

That is a common misconception with new members. You think you have to wait until your use year starts to use or borrow points. That is not correct. All points use is based on date of stay, not when you make the reservation.

This bears highlighting and repeating. It really does seem to be a common misconception.

Makes me wonder about people who don't frequent forums like this. I wonder how many of them go year after year waiting for their UY to begin and wonder why they have trouble booking reservations? :confused3

Very true. You would think that special emphasis would be placed on this question/issue.

It is also the type of thing that is hard to locate via the web forum's search tool (especially if you don't know to look for it).

I agree with the others, you can borrow from the 09 UY for a stay in the 08 UY even if you're still in the 07 UY. The only exceptions I can think of would be for items you can reserve 2 years out such as DCL or some II exchanges. Using the current example, assume you were in the 07 UY but the trip occurred during the 09 UY. In that case you'd use EITHER 2007 OR 2008 UY points with any needed and appropriate banking and borrowing.

Here's my question with the above example, do you have to have your points moved around before you make the reservation? Or does the CM borrow points from another UY while you call into make the reservation, all at once? What I'm trying to figure out is if I have to borrow the points from 09 UY into the 08 before picking up the phone to make the reservation and thus taking a risk that I'll be able to get the type of room I want at my home resort, with the view I want. It's my understanding once you bank/borrow, the points are stuck in the UY you moved them to.

Thanks

You are correct in that borrowing (like banking) cannot be reversed.

Borrowing only happens when you make a reservation and tell the CM that you want to borrow points for it. So to answer your question, you never borrow until you are actually making a reservation that will use the borrowed points. Of course, if you cancel the reservation the points cannot be returned to the original UY.

So borrowing, unlike banking, only happens when you make a reservation. There are no deadlines or any other special timelines around borrowing like there is for banking.

So I think this puts your mind at ease about taking a risk of borrowing points without knowing if you can make a reservation with them. There is really no reason to do the borrowing transaction until the reservation is being made, and that's how Disney set the system up. :)

Banking requires a separate transaction, you have to do it before you make the reservation (a simple procedure). But borrowing is done at the same time as the reservation.
