Can I Afford It/Suze Orman

Hmmm, I wonder if she was more struggling to decide whether or not it was a good idea to buy her boyfriend the watch, vs spending the money. More of an emotional vs financial issue and wanted a financial perspective on it?:confused3

Sounds like a bogus call.........if she's smart enough to get thru med school, she should be able to fiqure it out on her own.

I watch the show often. I also thought the doctor was bragging. She had $300,000 liquid and was calling about spending $1000? I understand the segment and the show perfectly. And Suze does allow some ridiculous calls on that segment - on both ends of income/spending spectrum.

Thank you. Obviously some people here just don't "get it." :rotfl:

That's the point I was TRYING to make and obviously not too successful.

Just because someone makes decent money doesn't mean they can afford to spend. Between mortgage, student loans, etc she may not have much extra to spend.

My aunt and uncle have owned numerous businesses and have done very well for themselves. Now they are pretty much retired and sold the businesses, except for an antique shop that is mostly a hobby to them. They are easily valued at over $25 million, but that doesn't mean they have all that money available to them. Don't get me wrong, they aren't struggling by any means, but most of their money is invested so not readily available. They have to consider any big purchases before actually making them.

My point is there are many reasons someone may not be able to afford something. You shouldn't just jump to conclusions without knowing the whole story. Jealousy doesn't look good on anyone.

Why do you think I'm jealous because I made a comment about a bogus caller on Suze Orman? Enlighten me please. You are the second poster who brought up the jealousy factor. I didn't realize my post came off as being jealous.

Are you trying to tell me that someone worth $25 million would agonize over every single purchase? That's amazing to me. Maybe they need to work with a financial planner who can put them on a budget and tell them how much they can spend per month. That way they wouldn't worry so much.

Again, the caller had more than enough CASH to pay off all of her loans.

This may be only me, but I can't see buying a boyfriend anything that cost $1,100 unless you literally have money to buff your shoes with.

A husband or a fiance? Sure, if it was in your means. But that's a lot of money for a boyfriend, to my way of thinking.

I just remembered the watch was for the man who just bought her a ring, so I guess he is her fiance.

Agonize, no.

Decide whether or not they wish to part with their pennies that invested elsewhere could increase their net worth? Sure.

Millionaire Next Door.

Some Millionaires still clip coupons even.

I've also thought the callers with large savings accounts and monthly income should know they can afford a relatively inexpensive item. I know the "Can I Afford It?" part of the show is a kind of rapid-fire segment, but I'd like Suze to ask these callers why they think they can't afford it. We'd get a lot more insight into their thinking.

You stated in a pp that you were jealous.

I'm certainly not telling you that they agonize over every purchase, but they didn't get their wealth from making unnecessary purchases either. You seem to think that just because someone has money they don't worry over finances. That is not the case with everyone.

Did you hear how much her mortgage and student loans were? How are you assuming that she had more than enough to pay them off? Most people would pay them off if they had the extra money, rather than letting the interest keep accumulating. Your assuming this was a bogus call when in fact it could have been a very legitimate caller.

I already stated that the caller had enough to cover her mortgage and student loans with the cash she had. You must have missed that post.

I am now really really really jealous that I can't afford to buy an expensive watch. :rolleyes1 You now know my secret.

The stupid part about that call is that you'd have to be some kind of class A moron to be PAYING interest on HUGE loans that you could easily pay off.

For example, that caller had a $28K CAR LOAN at 5.9%.

She had something like $170K in Student Loans at around 3%

She had a mortgage of about $330K at 5.75%.

She had over $300K in LIQUID SAVINGS. There is no way she is earning more than 5.9% in interest on that savings...

She should have paid for her car in cash.

She should be aggressively paying down her mortgage, or she should have put more $$$$ down when she bought the house.

She should pay OFF the student loan.

Etc.

This woman obviously is NOT good with managing her money, but that's a different segment.
