I was just wondering how many points i should purchase. When you are a member can you use your points for anything else or do you get any discounts on tickets or meal plans??? Thanks

Points can only be used to pay for your lodging.

There are some discounts, currently there's a $100 discount on annual passes. No discounts on meal plans, though we don't have to pay the holiday surcharge on the dining plan.

Discounts come and go, and they are not considered part of your membership. Don't even consider them when buying, they could all go away the day after you buy.

The only thing that's guaranteed in your contract is the right to stay at your home resort, subject to availability. That's what you're buying. Everything else is subject to change.

Not even sure why Disney publishes their Point of Sale brochure...they have or in the process of changing just about every provision in the document. Not the friendly Mouse that I was use to back when OKW was the only DVC Resort. In fact, things are changing so fast that their own sales people are unaware of the latest changes to the POS document.

points can only beused for reservations. members would love it if they could use points for passes and other Disney perks.

Speak for yourself. I think points are WAY TOO EXPENSIVE to use for passes and perks. The $100 discount on the AP is the best perk by far that we get. If I had to pay in points for that, it would be about 400 points, and I'd rather keep those for what I purchased....A villa to vacation in.

I agree with Diane.

DVC has to turn points into cash to pay for anything besides a stay at a DVC resort or an RCI/LBVTC trade. There is a cost to do that and it is not cheap! Members would pay dearly for the convenience. Doubt very many informed members would use points for tickets or meals.

should get a bigger discount on admission for what we pay for this membership

Your membership only entitles you to use your points to book a room, nothing more. Perks come and go and a $100 discount on a adult AP is better than nothing. :goodvibes

The admission discounts come from Disney Parks, to encourage us to come to the parks and spend even more money. They're not a thank-you gift for purchasing a DVC membership from a different division of the company (DVD).

1) There has always been talk about more "discounts" or "rights".
2) But, we bought a timeshare lease, not an ownership of Disney.
3) There are some courtesy discounts, but no more should be expected.

I would strongly encourage you to buy points *only* with a mind towards using them for DVC lodging, and nothing else. If you are unsure, I would also encourage you to under-buy by a little bit. You can borrow (and eventually skip a year), transfer in (market rate currently ~$10/pt), or get one-time use points from Disney (~$15/pt, max 24tpts/year) if you need to go a little over. If you find yourself *consistently* going over, you can add on.

But, if you over-buy, you need to do something with those points to avoid losing their value entirely.
