my doggie is 7 years old and she's a happy mutt! all the way up until about yesterday afternoon, she's been running and jumping like normal, and has had no problem with the stairs or playing with my other dog. yesterday when i got home she did the normal jumping thing, and her and my other dog started playing.

then about 30 minutes later, i noticed she couldn't jump on me or the couch. she'd try, but stop. when she tried to get on the couch, she let out a little whimper. she can run down the stairs fine, but is slow going up. she eats fine, and still shows her normal interest in things.

can dogs strain a muscle from playing too rough or something? should i just watch her for a few days and let her feel better, or what? also, nothing hurts to the touch, just certain ways she moves.

thanks:(

I would imagine that they can. But keep in mind she is getting up there in age and may not be getting around like she used to. Older dogs can get arthritis. I would take her to the vet just to be safe.

I hope she's feeling better!

my pekingese threw her back out a few months ago, the vet gave her muscle relaxers and she was fine in a few days. Her back was very tight when you felt her and she was walking very slow.

and it was fast too.......she had a hard time jumping up on the furniture and also our bed......so we put the bed down to her leve.....it was a water bed and she could just walk on it......make sure her feeding dish is up to her head level so she does not have to bend over......just take it easy and call your vet......they have meds that will help

would arthritis just all of sudden show up in a matter of hours though? she was perfectly normal earlier in the morning.

Well,

My beagle strained a hind muscle a few years ago. Vet say togive him a little baby aspriin to help him with pain.

Have you checked with your vet?

Please take your baby to the vet.

Two years ago, our german shepherd (then age 3) actually managed to sprain her shoulder. We had to medicate her AND severely restrict her activities for 2 weeks (meaning, she was either crated or on a leash) so that she could heal, not chase her ball and keep the injury aggravated.

Good luck!

Yes! Our Cocker Spaniel pulled a hind leg muscle last summer. It was so sad to see her try to walk and just yelp. According to the vet there isn't really anything you can do for it. Took about a week to get back to being able to walk well and about a month for the tenderness to completely go away.

I vote yes. Our cat made a daring escape over the back of the washer and pulled a muscle in the struggle with the fill and drain hose. Our vet too recommended half a baby asprin.

I took several months before his gait was back to normal.

They can strain or worse, tear a ligament or muscle. It took our Carin nearly 2 months to heal from a bad strain. If it had been a tear, surgery (to the tune of $1500) was our only option.
