Any dentists out there? Can brushing regularly with baking soda strip the enamel from teeth? I have searched online and all I come up with are things from Yahoo answers or companies selling their "safe" toothpaste. My DH and I have debated this for years. Do you think one of us would ever think to ask the dentist? :rotfl:

I'm not a dentist, but baking soda toothpaste is all I use (I actually like the taste), and I have always had a clean bill of health from my dentist.

I don't think baking soda does, but I have heard lemon juice can. That's why it is not recommended as a bleaching agent for teeth.

Do you use the toothpaste that has baking soda in it or do you brush with the real baking soda right out of the box?

My great Aunt lived to the age of 97, brushed 3 imes daily with a 50-50 mix of salt and baking soda, and had all of her own teeth.

Baking soda is perfectly fine for your teeth. At one time the doctor thought I was having an allergic reaction to something that was in toothpaste, so for 3 months I had to use baking soda right out of the box. When I asked my dentist about it, he said "what do you think people were using before toothpaste was invented'?

Years ago my dentist said that straight baking soda was too abrasive. It was ok to use for the semi annual cleaning, but not daily. I think that baking soda toothpaste is probably safe-not too much in it to do any damage.

Baking soda is also effective for polishing teeth (without scratching the tooth surface) and fighting bad breath (sprinkle a little on the toothbrush bristles

I use it daily. It tastes like butt right after you use it but really makes my mouth feel clean soon after. I think it is whitening too.
