Can anyone think of a good job for my mom?

My mom needs to find a job (we're in the Lehigh Valley, so if anyone around here knows of anything specific, let me know!). She has experience in sales, is pretty good with computers, and is good with people. She doesn't have a degree, so that can be a limiting factor. She would prefer not to go back to selling cars, but I'm really not sure what she can do. The job can be full or part time. She's in her 60's, so let's stay away from heavy lifting jobs for her! Any thoughts? What should she look for? Should she call around to places? She'd be a great receptionist or office manager, too. I keep trying to think of things, but I know the Budget Board folks will have some great ideas. Help me brainstorm! Thanks!

My friends own a car dealership -- not in that area -- and they always seem to be looking for receptionists. That would be a great tie in for her especially since she has some history with the industry. They also seem to always need people to work in the billing/warranty area (well not anymore since my friend finally went to the dealership and just took over that job since it was so hard to keep filled!).

The one thing I try to push my mom to do (but she hasnt taken my advise lol) is working for the airline. Many do phone reservations from your home (they dont want to pay overhead to have an "office") and the big perk...FREE FLIGHTS...but can't get my mom to jump on this...oh well

How about working in a call center? Like for a catalog, insurance company, student loans, etc? I looked up the student loan servicer PHEAA, but that looks too far away.

I'm not sure where Leigh Valley is located in Pa, but is she near the turnpike? I heard the people who work there get paid really well. Might be too much on her feet though. Have her check with the Enterprise car rental place near you. My Dad worked driving cars to different locations for Enterprise. He could take a job or not, depending on his schedule. Not sure all Enterprise locations do this. It's worth a look if she's interested in something like that. Good luck!

Once my kids were in High school, I checked into restocking greeting cards in our local supermarket. I happened to see a woman doing it and I started asking her about it. She said it was great work, and that she could pick her hours. The boxes weren't heavy and she traveled to a few different stores. Doing the magazines would require heavier lifting.

Oooh, good ideas! How do I find out more about the greeting card thing and the airline thing? Enterprise is a great idea, too. I know how to get in touch with them! Keep the ideas coming!

For like $15 your mom can peruse the job listings (all work from home) and if she doesn't find something...there is some sort of money back garuntee. It's a local company here in Colorado that runs it (they make sure ALL the jobs are legit before posting them)...and our local news has done several stories on it with fabulous outcomes for peple who have used the site. :D

Good luck!

Try your local golf or country club. Usually relatively easy work on the clubhouse side of things...

Are these jobs local to Colorado or are they nationwide? I work full time outside the home now but I need to get a part time job (15-20 hours) for some extra money.

Hi Jessica (I live in East Stroudsburg)...my mom just turned 60...she is working one more year. When she retires from working in the courthouse (deputy register and recorder of wills and deeds) she is going to persue becomming a "student helper" in the school system...it's where you shadow a special needs child and assist in anything they need to get through the school day. It's not a nurse...no medical stuff and you need not have an education backround. Lot's of these aids are "older" and LOVE doing this...great hours and benefits and a wonderful feel good job...Another idea she likes is becomming a school bus driver or aid(moniter) on a bus for kids with special needs...also a great job with part time or full time runs usually available (if your mom likes this idea, my hubby drives for the IU20). This is also a position with great benefits....and options for Summers off! Good Luck!

Cool idea, although probably not her thing. I used to sub for IU21, so I'm familiar with those jobs and I have mentioned those to her int he past. She's not really a kid person, better off dealing with adults (to each their own!)

I like the Pharmacy tech or clubhouse job ideas. I'll pass those along for sure!

What about at the hospital? Lehigh Valley Hospital is HUGE and I bet they have jobs in the area of "patient Representative" which is just answering phone processing paperwork. The website has careers listed here

My father in law retired but was not ready to totally retire so he so got a job at a local school as a playground attendant and morning building support (bus monitoring and so on). He works school days 8-12:30. Perfect for a semi-retired life and he has school holidays and breaks.

Isn't there a Wegmans near there? I always see semi-retired people working there, and it's consistently on the best places to work list.

May I suggest that she move to Orlando and work at Disney?!?!?! :lmao:

Do you think she would enjoy selling products at home?

Does she need a steady income?
If she needs a steady income selling products at home doesn't always provide that.

She should check out www.narms.com

It has lots of merchandising jobs listed. Basically, you work day to day on your own in retail stores (Target, Walmart*, CVS, Walgreens, Grocery etc) & put out product, & put up displays.

Many of them do not require heavy lifting. It's a fun way to get to know new people & things change day to day.

Good Luck!

My mom was booted out of the job market many years ago (she's always been a great worker and smart woman), and just recently found a new job that really works for her. She was an office manager/accountant/bookkeeper - now she's a bank teller and training to be a CSO. Fits her very well and there's a ton of room to move around and up in the company. Being a teller got her back into the work market, and now she's training to move up!

I highly recommend it.
