Starting to work on a trip to visit my parents in June and on the way back, DH wants to go to Washington, DC for one night to break up the trip. We just want to hit the highlights and he wants to go to the Aviation museum.

Can someone give me a lead on a hotel that is reasonably priced and somewhat close to the museums?

Thanks - Diane:thumbsup2

My friend actually has a list of some great places...she was there in Nov. I will be seeing her on Sat. (she's out-of-town right now) and I can get her list of places for you then. She has stayed at several of them. They were super locations and very reasonably priced. Feel free to PM me a reminder! :)

I am not sure of the cost (we used points), but the JW Marriott is on the corner of 14th and Pennsylvania. It was perfect for seeing the museums.

Second the JW. If you can stay on the weekend, most DC hotels are drastically reduced.

There's a Holiday Inn right by the Air & Space Museum. They are the same subway stop if you decide to use the subway. My family and I stayed there years ago and it was wonderful-right in the middle of a lot.

Third this JW Marriott!

Keep in mind too that most hotels in the city will charge anywhere from $30 to $50 per night for parking. I think we paid $40 here.

I fourth the JW Marriott but we also have stayed at the Residence Inn Capitol Hill. It was very close to the museums and included a free breakfast. You did have to pay to park there.

Hilton Garden Inn downtown...franklin square I believe. Its close to the white house and across the street from the metro. Thats where Ive stayed the last 2 times I was there

DH and I loved the JW Mariott a few years back and we got a good deal through Expedia or Travelocity. Make sure that you're near the Metro - driving in DC is a nightmare.

The Washington Marriott at Metro Center is a great location. It's on 12th StNW between G and H. I put link in below to location info so you can see how it is situated in relation to other sites. We stayed there this past summer and walked to the Smithsonian's and it is also walking distance to a number of other locations ( Chinatown, Capitol, Spy Museum & also Whitehouse too ) but the best was Metro station just outside lobby doors to right. Couldn't beat that. There are a number of places to eat nearby too that are walking distance from diner-type ( Lincoln Diner) to bar/grill (Harry's at Hotel Harrington) to ESPN, Hardrock Cafe, etc. It's lobby had a nice casual type eatery but we didn't get a chance to try it out but the menu looked interesting and not excessively priced. I booked it via a bid on Priceline, with fees & taxes I think it was around $80 per night ( would have cost over 3x that amount had I booked via Marriott or other travel booking sites ).

Which Aviation Museum? There are 2 now - the main one is the Smithsonian and now there is the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum at Dulles. Both are owned and run by the Smithsonian. They had too many airplanes in storage so they opened a 2nd museum. The main one is on the mall and the Udvar-Hazy one is next to Dulles - both are free to enter but Udvar-Hazy costs $12 to park. At Udvar-Hazy they have a tower that you can go in to watch planes take off and land at Dulles. It's well worth the trip right there. Udvar-Hazy has a real space shuttle, the Enola Gay, Concorde and some really rare Japanese planes. We go there often and actually like it more than the one downtown. I used to work at an air force museum and this one rocks! There are several hotels and restaurants near by that I can tell you about if you want some information.

bumping, because i'm interested as well. my family would be going the 3rd week in march, and we can't go mid-week due to DH's work schedule. we'd need to check in on a monday and leave on friday or saturday, probably friday.

I'd like to add into this too, as DC is one of the potential summer vacation destinations this year; I've actually been researching it the last couple of days!

Anyone stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn at Tyson's Corner? i'm searching Expedia and it's got a great price and the parking is only $5 per day. it gets good reviews too.

Marriott at Metro Station. We stayed there in August and thought the location was just great.

I have a friend who stayed there while house hunting. He really liked it. Traffic there is bad, though! My husband works across the street from it and they are doing construction right now. But... there is a huge mall right near there that has all sorts of neat things to do and neat shops. Downtown is about 15 min.and you are right near the Beltway. Metro train is about a 15 min drive and you'd have to pay to park or you can drive downtown and find free parking (park along the Potomac River for free parking - shhh it's our little secret). If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

I'm so glad to see the Marriotts gettting the nods here. They might be a little more but are great properties in Washington DC. I fifth, or whatever number we are on the JW Marriott, but the others are great too.
So many suggest the L'Enfant Plaza because of it's proximity to the museums, but this is one place I DON'T recommend. You can read some reviews on Trip Advisor.

If budget is NOT a concern, my vote would be for the Williard Intercontinental. It is located adjacent to the White House and across the street from the White House Visitor's Center.

thanks :) i also found the courtyard by marriott dunn loring (sp?) which has been raved about by several DISers on other DC threads, and although the price is a little higher, it is 1 block from a metro stop and parking is free. we might be going with that one. i can get it for $173.00 per night with AAA discount through the marriott website, and it's $199.00 per night on expedia. we're jazzed about the trip! anyone got any must-sees?

Check out tripadvisor.com - a great site for any recommendations on travel needs. It actually ranks all the hotels from one to ?? based on other peoples reviews and experiences.
