I want to take my sister to see a Broadway show for her 40th Bday in Jan. I havent seen any shows in awhile so I have no idea what is good now. The thing is it has to me a musical, lighthearted, not Disney, and appeal to different age groups because our 18 year old sister is coming with us too! Any suggestions?

Wicked was fabulous and is everything a Broadway show should be.:thumbsup2

This is probably the best on Broadway right now, but we need another great show. We need another Les Mis or Phantom - another EPIC show.

I haven't seen it, but I wish I could go to the Spiderman show.

Thanks for the suggestions but my younger sister and I have seen Wicked already and my older sister wants to save it to see with her DD. Sorry, I should have mentioned that! Jersey Boys I forgot about and have heard wonderful things about it! But, will my 18 year old sister appreciate Frankie Valley? :rotfl:

Billy Elliott is another popular one right now

I can second Billy Elliott. It has a great story and wonderful dance. Language is a little rough, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger children, but your sisters should love it.

Promises, Promises would be perfect, but it is closing January 2. :sad1:

It's actually kind of a rough road on Broadway right now. I was looking at shows for a Christmas present for my parents and am kind of coming up empty. A LOT of stuff is either closing in December or January.

I know you said no Disney, but both of Disney's shows on Broadway are pretty great. Mary Poppins was much better than I (and my parents and brothers) expected it to be, and The Lion King is probably the best thing any of us have seen onstage. If you haven't seen them, don't simply dismiss them because you think they're too "kiddie."

"Jersey Boys" as someone else suggested skewed a little too old for me. I grew up listening to the Four Seasons music thanks to my parents and I liked it. However, the musical itself fell a little flat for me. I didn't hate it, but there was really a lackluster story there. (Shameless plug -- a review of the musical [and a couple other Broadway shows] can be found on my blog via the link in my signature.)

Just wanted to add I said no Disney because I already saw Mary Poppins and The Lion King, and my sister saw Mary Poppins. I would go see The LionKing again but we promised our kids we would take them to see that with my sis and her kids.

I can't believe Promises Promises is already closing!!

Billy Elliot
Jersey Boys
Is that it?

Rock of Ages would probably really appeal to the 40 yo and the 18 yo would probably enjoy it too.

I really want to see Women on the Verge..., but I hear the reviews have not been stellar. It has a great cast however--Patti LuPone, Sherie Rene Scott, Laura Benanti, Danny Burstein, Brian Stokes Mitchell.

Here is a list of everything playing right now. Scroll to the bottom for opening dates for the upcoming months.

Promises, Promises! - you get to see Kristen Chenoweth!

depends on when in Jan - they close sometime in January.

Is Shrek still playing on Broadway? I haven't seen it, but heard it was fantastic.

I did see Jersey Boys on tour..........incredible..........& I had no interest in seeing it. I'd see it again in a heartbeat.

What about the new Spiderman musical? My good friend is playing the Green Goblin, and he is just raving about the whole performance. They are in previews for the next 6 weeks, so I don't know how that would fit in with your timing. The music should be right for your sisters. How can you go wrong with Bono and The Edge? I saw a clip of it on 60 Minutes Sunday night, and really wish I could get to NYC to see it!

Rock of Ages was so much fun!!! My best friend got me tickets for my 40th and we loved it so much that I've gone back already. My kids tease me that I should get paid for the publicity! Jersey Boys was fantastic, hands down my favorite but I'm not sure if you're 18 year old sister would enjoy the music. Mama Mia is fun also.
