We are travelling on Sunday for 4 nights 5 days and flying with flybe.

When I booked the flights in November I just booked 1 x 20kg case between 2 adults 2 small children. After starting the packing tonight i think I was being very optimistic! Although we get 8kgs of hand luggage each - just can't see us fitting everything in :( looked at extra baggage charges tonight and its around £30 to add another 20kg case so would rather avoid this if possible.

just wondering what allowances people normally manage on for a similar trip?

I can do flybe hand luggage for one adult, one 11-year old, for 5 nights and 5 days in winter ;).

Really think about what you need to take, and what you can do without. And don't panic - if all else fails either add another case if you really are struggling, or buy/borrow some very lightweight carry-on bags in the right dimensions for cabin bags on flybe (you can get them in most stores/markets, take a tape measure to make sure the dimensions are right), and take one each of those as well as your hold case. Mind you, if you have to buy 4 new cabin bags, you'd be just as well adding a 2nd hold bag to your flight.

You only need 2 pairs of comfy shoes each, including the ones you wear to travel.
You don't need towels or loads of toiletries, you get towels and shower gel/bodywash and soap provided at the hotel.
Take one coat each, travel in them.
If you don't have room in your luggage for any snacks you were intending taking, don't take them all if it means you can't fit everything else in your existing luggage allowance - its not going to cost you £30 at DLP for snacks unless you are constantly snacking all day every day.

Thanks :) wow you're good at packing to manage on hand luggage alone!
I think I will go through the case and take out things we don't need. The biggest problem is the weather - it's forecast lovely for our stay but dont know if it will actually stay warm so had packed for all weather! 2 changes of clothes per day for the kids and us too. It's hard knowing what to take and it's amazing how much room my daughters princess dresses and animator dolls take in the case!

I need to get some little hand luggage bags/cases, will borrow some off family today.

Tried to check in online now it's time to do that and its saying one or more passengers not eligible have to do it at the airport - dont know why but will have to ring them this morning - stressed!!

Ive travelled hand luggage only several times including a winter trip and a trip which included a few days in Paris as well.
As Elaine says its easy to do if you think about what to take.

Use every bit of space - if you have shoes in your case stuff them with socks/underwear to fill that space.

You say youve got 2 changes of clothes per person per day - you wont need that many. There will be days you dont change - you may not go back to your hotel some days until the end of the day.
Take layers to account for the weather rather than different outfits

Thanks for your help. I think it's the kids things I'm struggling with as having to take shorts and jeans/chinos for my son incase of bad weather.
And for my daughter she's got a princess dress for each day we are there but was planning to take an outfit for her for each night also.

I will have a look at the case again later and try and scale it back

if the forecast is warm, but its rainy, shorts/three-quarter trousers are better than long-length trousers because with shorts your son isn't going to get water from the hem of his trousers creeping up his legs and making him feel sodden.

You won't need 2 outfits a day for the adults, maybe a couple of extra tops and a pair of jeans/trousers each extra total. Unless your kids are very messy individuals :goodvibes, you won't need 2 outfits a day for the kids either. Again, I'd take a couple of changes of clothes extra each for them total, not per day.

Remember, if its rainy and you get wet, your clothes and shoes will dry in the hotel room.

Reading this I can see why I always return with 1 unused case of clothes
1 to wear, 1 spare and 1 just in case is not the way to go is it ?

DLPdaft and A Small World I need you round my house on the 9th July :worship:

I don't think I own that many clothes (although DD certainly does :rotfl:).

Lol me too.....

I'm like you Jill!! With Eowyn, I tend to pack 2 outfits for each day, plus spare tops that go with all the botyoms she'll be wearing as they are what usually gets dirty! I am not used to a baggage allowance, but when I have to adhere, I usually pack shoes and as much of the kids clothes into hand luggage. I spend loads on new outfits for them and would rather replace mine if a bag was to go missing.
I tend to pack travel size toiletries because I've got sensitive skin for me, including a small bottle of shampoo etc, but Johnny is happy to use what's in the hotel!
But we do only pack 1 spare shoes each. A comfy pair for the day and smarter pair for the evening. Though Johnny would take several pairs of converse if he could :-)
Personally I will travel in jeans and take combat trousers in a case - I think more tops than bottoms do us well. 2 for each day but hardly any changes for bottoms.
Flying to Germany for 5 days I took everything but the kitchen sink for a two year old and I, came in at 15kg and I came back with way to much unworn. Learnt my lesson then lol!

We had 2 x 20kg cases and then my youngest had her princess carry on case with all of her princess dresses in.
We took 5 t shirts each, 3 pairs of trousers, 2 pairs of shoes, a hoody each and a waterproof coat and this did us for the variety of weather we experienced. Coming home we had reduced the weight by 10kg so I must have taken 10kg worth of food and snacks! We wore the hoodies and the waterproof coats to travel in. One thing I would recommend is a pair of flip flops, my feet were so hot in my converse from the amount of walking we did I would have kissed somebody if they'd given me my havaianas especially on the warm days!

Omg I can't believe how much some of u take!!! Flying we had a hand luggage case each.... And in that ds2 had to have nappies, waterproof bed sheet, and his blankets!!!
I don't change clothes during the day, what I start in, I finish in lol. I have a clean top for each day, and maybe another pair of bottoms... Same for kids, but with extra tshirt.... And we each have change of shoes, and travel in thickest clothing/coats...

I think it all boils down to our first trip to dlp in March 2004, there we were all kitted out for spring weather and it snowed !
I had with me 1 pair of heeled boots and 1 pair of baby pink moccasins that leaked, we ended up wearing all of our clothes at the same time for the 3 days we were there and I spent a fortune buying hats, gloves and scarves and spare trainers for the boys, never again !!! lol
