Can any NY'ers help me out?

My friend and I are contemplating on going to a hair show in NYC next April (4/30-5/2). The show is being held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center located at 655 W. 34th Street in New York. Can anyone tell me of hotels in the area? My friend found the Gershwin Hotel, are there any others? What is the average price for a hotel per night during this time? Any help would be wonderful!!

There are so many hotels in that area - I would not stay directly by the Javits center - I would stay more towards heralds square (Macy's). This way there is more to do around your hotel - then it is a 10 minute walk to the javits center. The area directly by the Javits center does not have much going on!

My dad works near the Javits center.

I agree with Nick United, stay in Herald Sq, or even times sq area if you want to be in the middle of everything.

The Gershwin is in a quiet area near the flower district. I always thought it looked a bit weird from the outside, and be forewarned, there isn't much open around it except during business hours, and there is a homeless shelter/soup kitchen very nearby as well, so sometimes at night it's not the best place to be walking near.

Take a look at the Edison, it will cost a bit more, but IMHO you'll get a lot more out of it--a neighborhood with plenty of nearby 24 hours restaurants that isn't quite as deserted at night, half a block from Broadway, and an easy (and IMHO safer) walk to the Javitts Center. Walk over to 7th and up/down as opposed to the higher numbered Avenues.
