Can An Atheist Be President.

Can an atheist be President?

  • It wouldn't matter to me. I would vote for the "man".

  • I would prefer to vote for an atheist.

  • I would only vote for someone who believed in God.

  • I would only vote someone who is in my religious denomination.

Results are only viewable after voting.
Bob:

I believe I did answer the question. Also, you are correct. I was a bit amiguous regarding my 'founding' statement. My intent was to indicate that the country was founded, in part, because of religious freedom. I also believe there is more documentation than not supporting their Christian religious beliefs.

I can honestly say that I would NOT vote for someone just because they were a Christian.

There's more to being the President of the United States than religion, that's for sure. If a person's political beliefs fall along the same line as mine, I would vote for them, regardless of their relgion or their non-belief in religion or God.

Well, if anyone other than a Christian white male runs I would say it is safe to assume they would not be republican.

I disagree. I think it is very likely that the first African American president or the first Female president will, in fact, be a Republican. Sort of like "Only Nixon could go to China or "Only Clinton could have signed Welfare Reform".

Galahad, love your sig!

Icequeen: You can roll your eyes at me all you want. I was thinking about that atheist man who wants "under God" taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance because he doesn't want his daughter to have to say those words. If he can challenge that (thankfully I don't think he got very far, since he doesn't have legal custody of his daughter and if I remember right the child's mother is not an atheist) I shudder to think what an atheist PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES would try to do!!!

FYI, one whackjob (no idea if that'll be censored or not) does not represent all athiests. Just like I'm sure there are Christians whom you would not like to represent you.

The United States is a religious country. 90 to 92% of Americans profess believe in God or a "Higher Power". I don't think that an atheist would even make it on a party ticket.

It doesn't matter to me. Religion (or lack thereof) is a very personal choice and none of my business.

An atheist certainly could be president. There is no religious requirement, therefore, no reason in the world he or she not be able to perform the functions of the job.

While there is certainly "no religious requirement", I personally don't think that the American people of either party would nominate anyone who was an atheist. It would be a loosing ticket.

It's apple and oranges, however. You asked if we'd vote for an atheist President, not whether or not we believe in God.

I'd venture to say a number of people who voted that they vote for the person, not their religion believe in God.

But Bob don't you know that the Christians would shout everyone down?

much as is being done on this thread

"Give me an example of how a Christian would solve a problem differently than a non-Christian."

Gay marriage

The KKK believes in God. I think I'd vote for the whackjob (nice word Mal, I like whackado too! :p ) who wanted the " ... one nation, under God ... " taken out of the Pledge, before I voted a KKK Christian into office! :earseek: :earseek:

I believe that a "number of people" would say that they would vote for the person, but when the curtain was closed on the voting booth, the majority would not vote for an avowed atheist. I know that I would not. Now I certainly don't represent all voters, however, I believe that more people than not, feel the same way.

Stupid me, thinking people would actually say what they felt here.

Do you realize how insulting that is? Again, just because someone is an atheist DOES NOT mean that they have no morals. Just because someone is Christian does not mean that they are moral (look at the molesting priests for example).

Please give me an example of what you think an atheist President would do that is horrible that you shudder at the thought?

Maybe we should be more worried about atheist Congress people?! :p

I would vote for anyone who could actually do something about the healthcare and job situation in the country and really come through with his/her promises. Religion doesn't matter at all to me, but I think to get elected, you have to at least pretend to be religious. It would be difficult for an avowed atheist to win.

They may say what they mean "here", but I don't think that this little mini poll is representative of what would happen across the country on primary day, let alone election day.

I do believe that someone starting his day out on his knees is being led in the right direction.
One would be very egotistical to think he could do it without guidance from God.
Let me get this straight. Only someone who lives his or her life like you live yours is "being led in the right direction," yet you're calling the opposite view "egotistical?" Amazing.
