Can a Wet iPhone Be Saved?

I hope you can get the phone to work. We back our iphones up to a computer; DH and DS do theirs more often than I do, but I don't have anything important on my phone. That way, if you have to get a new one, just plug it in and restore it.

I had an unfortunate incident a couple years ago where my phone fell off a table perfectly into a cup of water that was sitting on the floor. I had just moved across the country two days before. It was in the water less than 5 seconds. I put it in rice overnight and it was fine. About a year later the microphone stopped working, but for some reason the water never triggered the water sensor so they replaced the phone for free. If you put it in rice for a while you should be fine.

I don't know about the phone, but I would love to hear the "unfortunate series of events!" LOL!

My first thought was what the heck is "going into the drink" ? I think we can all imagine that unfortunate series of events...BTDT

DH had his iphone in his swim suit pocket when he got into a hot tub. He hopped out after a couple minutes when he realized it. It had a water resistant case on it, but it was soaked. We did the rice for a few days. No luck. After a week he bought a new one. Then randomly a week or two later it turned on and works fine. We gave it YDD to use as an ipod. So there is some hope...but if you're luck is like ours, it won't work again until you replace it, lol.

Isn't it interesting how some bad thing you could NEVER make happen on purpose, can easily occur by accident?

So sorry. Get a life proof case. It's not 100 percent safe in water but it's better than nothing. Plus protects in lots of other ways also.

My daughter's phone fell in the toilet (a clean one) and we put it in rice for a week and sure enough it worked after. We had to get her a new phone but we kept it as a back up. Later our son dropped his phone and it died and now he is using the phone that was in rice. It needed to be a week. We tested it after a few days and it still didn't work but it did after a week and is still working 1 year later. I hope it works.

How does a girl drop their phone in the toilet? I can see a guy standing up and peeing and looking at cell phone. They say 1 in 6 cell phones have poop on them. Glad she got her cell phone working again.

An "unfortunate series of events" led to my DH going into the drink fully-clothed with his practically new iPhone 6 in his pocket. Any advice on possibilities for salvaging it? I do NOT have access to dry rice, although DH would probably move heaven and earth to get some if it were a sure-fire solution. Ideas? TIA :headache:

He went into the drink fully clothed :confused3. What does that even mean? And where are you that you'd have to move heaven and earth to get rice? I think there are a dozen stores within 5-10 miles of my house that sell every kind of rice imaginable. Inquiring minds want to know.

To 'go into the drink' means to fall into the sea (or possibly another body of water, but most likely the sea/ocean). And I think OP is overseas on vacation. I imagine dry rice is hard to come by at the hotel gift shop!

Going into the drink is a saying meaning going into the water. So, it means he fell in a body of water fully clothed with his phone in his pocket.

We're at a fairly isolated resort on the Mayan Riviera - definitely no Albertson's within walking distance. The language barrier is surprisingly difficult; we know absolutely no Spanish and while some staff know English (sort of), communicating non-routine ideas has been a real challenge. Twice I tried to get the dry rice (asked in a few different ways; uncooked, raw, etc.) and both times ended up with a cooked rice dish. I finally did get some yesterday by using a translation app on my iPad (I should have thought of this sooner) and showing it to them along with the phone. They laughed hard and immediately understood. I guess dry rice is the universally known solution for a wet phone.:rotfl2:

Well SNAP...2 1/2 days in the rice, plugged into the charger overnight and - nothing (or nada as they say here in Mexico). :sad1: Even though DH paid out the waz and bought the extended care plan, I'm sure Apple will void any warranty due to the water. Anybody have feedback on using a 3rd party repair place to try and salvage the phone and/or data? Turns out it was not backed up because DH has been having trouble with his Apple ID for a while now...

Not sure about the data, but has he checked with the Apple care plan people? I think it's somehing like $79 to replace the phone if it's broken with the policy. (Or maybe a little more, I can't remember, exactly. But that's pretty much the whole reason I bought it!)

Depending on what apple care he has you get 2 water incidents across the 2 year coverage now so worth giving Apple a call.

Dry rice worked for my mom when she walked into lake michigan with her iphone in her pocket.

Just saw your update. Don't give up - it might take a bit longer to dry out.

My wife put her iPhone 6 in our backpack cooler at Disney last summer. Only 1/4 inch of water in the bottom from a leaky ice bag which she didn't see until after she pulled out the phone. The phone was off and we put it in a bag of silica packs for 48 hours. It wouldn't turn on so we put it on a charger since the battery was almost dead when she shut it off. The battery got very warm quickly which indicates it's shot. We checked the water mark indicator and it was active. Btw, it was only in the backpack for 1-2 minutes. If your husbands phone was on when he went in, I'm gonna guess it's shot.

She took the phone to Apple Store and bought a replacement for $300. Should be able to get them cheaper now.

DH took it to a little "phone fixing place" in Playa del Carmen yesterday. They opened it up and the battery had actually sort of "blown up"; there was battery acid (or whatever is inside those kind of batteries) all over the inside and a scorch-mark where it got hot. :sad2: Yep - that phone's a gonner. We arrived home late last night so I imagine DH's first move today will be to hustle over to Apple and see what can be done about a replacement and any hope of retrieving the data. Thanks to everybody who gave input.

Girl here. I dropped mine in a clean toilet a month ago. It was in the back pocket of my jeans and fell out. Luckily it seems unscathed.

If u manage to get it turned off and into bag of rice.. Wait 3 days or so. Boot it up and it works... It won't last long.
They tend to misfunction! Last time I got 2 months outta mine

I will be very interested in hearing what Apple says or willing to do. Did it have Applecare + on it?
