Can a scratchy DVD "break" a DVD player??

I believe this has happened to me twice now, but then again it could also just be rotten luck! Is it possible for a scratched DVD to cause the DVD player to break, by making the mechanism move all over the place trying to find the next track??

We just lost our 2nd player in a year, and we weren't having any problems with either one until we went through a batch of pretty bad DVDs (from Netflix, most recently. Seems many of the DVDs we got were pretty beat up).
