We are taking our 16 year old grandson on a 3 day Disney Dream Cruise. I was told he does not need a passport just a birth certificate and a photo ID. My question is can he use his school ID that has his photo or do we need to get him a State ID with photo. Please help leaving in 3 weeks.

To be safe, I would get him a State ID. There's some question about the validity of a school ID because it doesn't have a birthdate on it.

We just got off the Magic on Friday and sailed with our 11 year old who only had a birth certificate, no photo id. We had no problems with id at all.

Some people have been reporting 16yr old NEED a State/Fed id.

OP, I would get a State id with birthdate and picture.

Because he's 11. The law changes when they turn 16. They need a government issued ID just like an adult at that point, so yes, OP get the state ID!

We just sailed in March and my son is 16 no photo Id needed for him just his cabin key needed to get off and on the ship. If he is doing an excursion my himself , he did the screaming eagle in St Thomas we just needed to sign a form saying we allowed it and that form was left in the room.

The birth certificate should be enough when checking in I would think. Not everyone has a passport.

But if you are that unsure I would get him a passport like someone mentioned or a state ID. We did have a passport at check in.

Getting off and on the ship in ports is not the issue. It is re-entering the US and you had a passport. Not having the proper ID at that point is where you will have problems.

Not for a 16 year old. They need govt photo ID. It has to be shown at checkin (as you did when you showed his passport) and when getti back to the states.

The op has to find a way for the child to get govt photo ID before this cruise. I hope their state ID is issued on the spot rather than having to wait for it to be mailed.

Gotcha....I can't see getting ID in three weeks though. Even if he got a drivers licence you have to wait for the picture ID or at least here you do. We do have a health Card we could use as well that has a picture. So not sure what you use in the States. I was just thinking off and on the boat...oops.

Just repeating my answer from the duplicate thread you posted, so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle:

For US citizens aged 16 and over, on a closed loop cruise, the minimum requirement is a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. Generally, a school ID isn't considered "government-issued".

*"Closed Loop" Cruises: If you are a U.S. citizen and you board a cruise ship at a port within the United States, travel only within the Western Hemisphere, and return to the same U.S. port on the same ship, you may present a government issued photo identification, along with proof of citizenship (an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization). Please be aware that you may still be required to present a passport to enter the foreign countries your cruise ship is visiting. Check with your cruise line to ensure you have the appropriate documents.

Some states issue state IDs on the spot; others mail them. I'm feeling really bad for the OP and grandson, that's for sure! Hoping they have a fast turnaround for ID places. (here in the States he could likely get a driver's license if he's done everything else for it, or he can just get a state ID)

At this rate, the fastest option (while by no means the cheapest) would be to get an expedited passport. You can generally get them in a day, as long as you have proof you need it within 2 weeks, I think it is.

Just an FYI an ontario health card with photo is not considered to be a valid form of id due to it have your OHIP number on it and someone who doesn't need it getting a hold of it and using for other purposes. That being said I have used it for photo ID a few times but never outside of Ontario, mainly at the Toronto Zoo with my membership.

Depending on the state where he lives, that's a fabulous point.

We got the government ID at the MVA for our 16 yo. He wasn't asked for it once! That said, I would still not risk not having it, especially when it does say "government ID". My TA told me that she didn't believe a school ID would work. I know our school ID's don't have birth dates etc. It was about $15, 1 1/2 hours waiting at the MVA and less than a week to get it mailed to us, so that peace of mind is worth it IMO.

Are you saying you did not have to show his govt ID at Port Canaveral when you checked in to get your KTTW cards?

That's right! We weren't asked for it at all. I was really surprised!

OP..I know here in MD, they will issue a government ID if you can show proof of needing it within 2-3 weeks (or something like that). Otherwise, it is mailed.

Wow! I would have been surprised too! I have found that that check in experience varies so much from one passenger to the next. So odd.
