Can 16 Year Old Use BC & School ID?

I'm more surprised you weren't asked for it when going through customs back in the US.

My entire family has come through customs after a Disney cruise where NONE of US (adults included) were asked for ANYTHING other than our Customs form. NO ID for any of us!!

We got the government ID at the MVA for our 16 yo. He wasn't asked for it once! That said, I would still not risk not having it, especially when it does say "government ID". My TA told me that she didn't believe a school ID would work. I know our school ID's don't have birth dates etc. It was about $15, 1 1/2 hours waiting at the MVA and less than a week to get it mailed to us, so that peace of mind is worth it IMO.

We have found they are VERY INCONSISTENT in asking for photo ID with the Birth Cert for minors. ;) Even at Customs!! Have never been asked for it there! LOL

Every time we have cruised (11) we are told while waiting in lime to clear customs to please have everything out and ready to show the customs agent.

Coming off the Wonder 3 weeks ago, the agent in Miami only glanced at our form and at the two passports, none of the DLs.

The agent we got studied our passports, asked questions about our items including if the carved turtle we bought on castaway cay was lacquered.

Sent from my rotary phone using DISBoards

We had everything ready, but only handed over the form and our passports. He went through the passports and made sure we were all accounted for, but didn't ask for any my ID or 16yo ds. My husband was the one who went right up to the counter and had his with the passports, but the agent didn't request any other information. I was relieved as this was our first time going through customs and I was expecting to be questioned.

We cruised last August with DS 17. They did not ask for his DL on check in although we did have it knowing it was required.

A passport is a government-issued photo ID, so if you have passports for everyone, then no one will need another photo ID at boarding or Debarkation. The concern is whether someone 16 or 17 with a birth certificate but not a passport needs a government-issued ID. Even if some teens have been able to cruise without photo ID, it is definitely a requirement for all passengers 16 and up. My state allows kids to get state IDs at time of application, so because they are so easy to get, my kids have had IDs since they were 7 and 11. I figured this way, if my son doesn't have a driver's license before he is 16, he will still be able to get on and off the ship without needing to carry a passport.

It's one or the other. :)
If you have a passport then you don't need to worry about showing your Driver's License (or state issued ID) along with a Birth Certificate. If you DON'T have a passport then you need BOTH the BC AND the photo ID. It just seems they are very inconsistent about asking for the photo ID for 16 and 17 year olds. You may get someone who asks to see it and you may get someone who doesn't! :)
