Cam's New Lease on Life Journal (comments welcome!)

Hi, Jen! Thanks for the good wishes. And yes, I'm sure DDalmost19 would love to have some company. And you are certainly tiny enough to fit in my suitcase!

I did another 5k yesterday and posted this on the race reports thread yesterday:

I still can't get to that sub-40:00 5k finish, though this would have been a great day to do it -- it was only around 70 degrees when we started, though it had rained all night and it was very humid.

I've done this race the past two years
2005 -- 50:12 (pace 16:09)
2006 -- 47:19 (pace 15:16)
2007 -- 41:19 (pace 13:18)

mile 1 --12:51 (best 9:38)
mile 2 -- 13:30 (best 9:22)
mile 3 -- 13:33 (best 10:19)
.12 miles -- pace 11:59
Finish time according to my Garmin -- 41:19 (pace 13:18)

It's good to see improvement. Even if I'm not meeting my ultimate goal, I'm glad to see the change in one year.

And then I found out some news last night and posted this today:

Okay, I have more news to share. Ready for this? I WON a trophy!!!!! I wasn’t there to hear my name announced or to receive it, but it is right there on the official results webpage!!! Third place among the walkers! I’m still not sure I feel right registering as a walker when I jog parts of the race, but I think I am still only jogging 10-20% of the time, so I also wouldn’t feel right registering as a runner (though someday I hope to really feel that I am a runner — right now I am thrilled to be an “athlete” at any level).

My first trophy!!! WOW! I didn’t expect it to mean so much. After all, I’ve finished 2 half-marathons, a full marathon, 2 15k’s and probably 20 5ks. For some reason – this means a lot.

I was down .4 at WW WI Tuesday night and vowed to crack down and really try to lose these 5 more pounds before we leave for our cruise. I don't think it is going to happen. Especially not if I have another splurge day like yesterday. I still can't believe I went with my family to a new burger place and had a double cheeseburger and fries and peanuts and then went for ice cream. I have only myself to blame for the lack of progress on the scale. UGH! I still have 5 days before the next WI on Tuesday night. In the interim, I have 3 more dinners/celebrations to get through by the end of this weekend. And I HAVE to provide and make smart choices for those.

Congratulations on completing another 5K, for coming in 3rd place, and for winning a trophy!:cheer2: Excellent job, my friend!

Ok, Cam, we want picture of you & your trophy!! How cool is that????

Did you find your dress yet?

Hope the rest of the week before WI goes well. It's just so darned hard sometimes!

Have an AWESOME weekend!

Congrats on the trophy:cheer2: :cheer2: Very cool! Great job on both your 5k's. The one sounded really brutal. I hope you got a chance to do some dress shopping today and not too much work.:)

I need some advice from you, my race running WISH friend: 6-7 years ago I ran two marathons and walked another, but I haven't run seriously in 5 years. To motivate myself, I signed up for the DL 5k labor day weekend (chickened out of the 1/2 marathon!) Is there a DL 5K thread some place? I tried searching, but didn't come up with anything. TIA!

:cool1: Well done Cam
Hope you survive the week food wise ;)
Keep that trophy in your mind - or better still take it with you!!

Hope things are going well, Cam! Almost CRUISE time!!!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks, everyone!
It has been crazy busy at work, and I am trying to wrap up a lot of projects before being out of the office for 4 business days. Geez, you'd think going away for less than a week would not be such a big deal!

I have been keeping up with my training for my 8/12 half marathon. Even did another 5k on 7/12 for a very worthwhile charity. Also had a great 2 1/2 hour session on the treadmill last Saturday when I did 10.64 miles or so, which is more than half a mile more than I thought I could accomplish in that time period. Very satisfying. Monday night I did 10.5 miles on the bike, which will be my last workout before we leave on vacation Friday. I am still doing my 100 crunches and pushups every day.

As for my weight? I feel like it is a lost cause, but I still keep plugging away. Eating right at breakfast and lunch 7 days a week and dinner probably 4 nights a week is helping me stay right in the same weight range. I was in a panic Monday a.m. when my weight was up more than 6 pounds, but it was all gone this morning, and I am back to a number I am more used to seeing. My goal is to really buckle down to dieting (I know that word is a no-no) when we get back from vacation, especially since we'll be mostly in taper mode for the half marathon. When we return from the race on 8/12, I should be able to really get back on the wagon with an eye toward a more significant loss before the full marathon in January, especially since I won't feel like I have to "train up" to the October 13k. If I can maintain most of my half-marathon readiness, I should be fine.

Well, in case I don't get back here before we go away, I will miss you all and think of you! :grouphug:

Thank you so much for all the good WISHes everyone! I will miss all of you this next 6 days while we are away.
I am pleased to report that I kept up with my 100 crunches/100 pushups challenge every single day since I returned from the Minnie race -- 74 days in a row!
I am also well on my way to meeting my July exercise challenge goal.

Weigh in this morning was 1_3.3. God only knows how much that will go up with all the great restaurants we'll be trying and then the cruise. I am going to walk as much as possible, and Howard and I are getting up early tomorrow morning to do a training run for the chicago distance classic along the river at Port Orleans resort. I am really excited about doing that.

Miss you all!
Hugs! :grouphug:

Have a WONDERFUL 6 days, Cam!!

Don't worry about the weight - we can lose it together when you get back!

Be safe & Have fun!!

Thank you, Julie! BTW, I really wish we lived closer. We could do our walks and WW meetings together and our fur-babies could have playdates! :)

Hi Cam...

I know you are on your cruise right now :goodvibes . I hope you are having a wonderful time!

Please post if you were able to keep up with training on the ship...we'll be on the same cruise in a few weeks and I'm worried about how I'll manage to maintain my training. Would love your feedback on the fitness center, etc :). Also would be curious how your training run at POR went as well. I'll need to get one in there b/c that's where we are staying afterwards! Thank You!!!

Thanks Cam :)

I hope you got your walks/runs in along the river at DW! Glad you are getting a vacation in with how busy you have been recently.

Hi, everyone! We are back from our absolutely awesome vacation. The only downside was really missing DS, but we knew he was having a great time at camp.
My eating on the ship was a total disaster, though I know my choices could have been so much worse. Some of my favorites were the paninis and fresh fruit at Goofy's Galley, and our dinner at Palos (veal saltimbucca for me; filet mignon for Howard) and fabulous dinners on our dining rotation (mixed grill, filet mignon, maple glazed salmon, macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi). The food at the adult beach at Castaway Cay was awesome too -- grilled cajun spiced mahi mahi, Greek salad, veggie couscous, barbecue ribs. The fresh fruit was to die for, always. Howard and Jenn liked the burgers and hot dogs, too. I drank at least one glass of wine each night and also had some mixed drinks along the way, so I was not surprised to see a 10 pound gain on the scale the morning after we got back. I knew it wasn't real, though, but reflected water retention from flying and from high sodium levels. It was down 3 pounds the next morning and even more this morning. So, I am well on my way back to pre-cruise weight!

AmyBeth -- I did much better with training than I expected, though I am never satisfied and wish I had done more. The biggest problem was that I didnt' bring enough workout gear. Can you imagine? I have always taken workout clothes that ended up coming home clean. This time, I was practically rationing my clothes because I hadn't been optimistic about how much I'd do.
Here's what we did:
Saturday morning we got up early for a run around the Port Orleans Resort. We started in front of our building at French Quarter and went along the Sassagoula River through the Port Orleans Riverside resort. Except for a few bridges, the course is wide and flat and absolutely gorgeous. My pace stunk because I was enthralled with the scenery and kept stopping to take pictures. I only ended up doing 3.22 miles and then we went to the food court where I had a banana, 2 beignets, and a large coffee.

Sunday was an early morning of packing and picking up bottled water and iced tea on the way to the port, so no running.

Monday morning no running because we were out late partying. ;)

Tuesday morning -- I got up at outside by 6:30 for a 6:41 sunrise. I went to deck 4 which is designated for jogging. One loop is .33 miles. There is a water fountain and plenty of comfy deck chairs, in case you get tired. :) I got out just a bit late, so on my 2nd loop the forward part of the deck was cordoned off to prepare for docking at Castaway Cay. All the runners would hit the automatic door button near the Walt Disney Theatre and run through the lobby and out the other side. I ended up doing about 2 miles before Howard came out and we headed upstairs for breakfast. The only bad thing about running on deck 4 is that you might come upon a smoker or two. Smoking is permitted only on one side of the ship (never remember if it is starboard or port) and there are ashtrays and comfy chairs, so I did pass 2 or three smokers on 2 of my loops. Really not bad, though.

Wednesday morning -- I got up early and went to the fitness center by about 7 a.m. It wasn't crowded, but there wasn't a lot of unused cardio equipment. I didn't count the number of machines, but I'd bet there were at least 6 TMs, 4 ellipticals and 4 bikes, besides lots of other equipment that I paid no attention to. The fitness center has been extended out over the forward deck of the ship and it is incredible to be on a TM looking out over the wide blue ocean. :cloud9: I took pictures of my view from the TM and my view from the elliptical, which I'll post as soon as I get them uploaded to imagestation. I did a very slow mile on the TM (inexplicably, I had shin splints) and 15 minutes on the elliptical (about 1.2 miles, I think) and loved every minute of it.

I hope you got your walks/runs in along the river at DW! Glad you are getting a vacation in with how busy you have been recently.

Thank you so much, Anna!

Okay, I am swamped catching up at work, but I am looking forward to visiting WISH journals and catching up with all my WISH friends. I really have to get back in the groove of losing and not eating every calorie I burn at the gym or wogging!

WELCOME BACK!!! Im LOVING hearing about the cruise--that is definitely my favorite vacation and i love hearing about other people's vacations...
i cant wait to see pictures so post away :)

Welcome home Cam
Glad you had a great trip & the food sounds amazing :)
Well done for getting some running in too, I didnt workout when we did DCL now i want to go just so i can take in that view on the TM!!!
Cant wait to see pics ;)

Thanks so much, WISH friends! I really enjoyed working out on vacation because I knew there had to be some benefit compared to all the food I was eating. UGH!
The scale is just so ugly right now. I am up 8 pounds from my lowest ever and I really need to get those pounds off. I am going to commit to journaling my food every day and being very conscientious about what I eat. I have to get over the mindset that I can eat the calories I am burning in my training. That is definitely sabotaging my efforts.
So, today is my brand new start.
Here is today's food plan:
B: coffee w/skim milk; 2 cups watermelon (2.5)
S: apple, banana (2)
L: corn, kidney beans & grilled chicken mixed with salsa (8.5)
S: apple, green beans, panini (6)
D: 4.5 oz london broil (6)

Total water -- 85 oz

Exercise -- 30 minutes bike -- 6.27 miles (158 calories)

THought I'd post a couple of my favorite pix from the trip:

I promised Howard I'd wear some daring clothes this trip, since no one we knew was around, :lmao:

The "infamous" red dress; this might have been a great family picture if we hadn't been missing DS ;)

I can't imagine how much huger my bottom half would be if I weren't training all the time (UGH!):

And this is how happy we were the entire time:

Welcome Home Cam!:goodvibes

Great job on your sit up and push up challenge! That is a lot of hard work that you are putting in there! Way to go!!!!:cheer2:
