Cam's New Lease on Life Journal (comments welcome!)

Hi Cam!!!

You are doing a great job!!! Way to go on resisting the pretzel and loaded hot dog!!!

Keep up the good work...I know weigh in will be good!!!!

Have a great day :)

Thanks, Scott and Jamie! :grouphug:

You know, as much as I tell myself that the scale should not be my measure of success, when it comes right down to it, the way that WW measures your success is at weigh in each week. And, ultimately, doctors look at how much we weigh compared to our height and draw at least initial conclusions based on that.

So, all along, when the scale hasn't moved I've persuaded myself to "stay on" WW (at least in theory) by recognizing that I feel better, my clothes fit better, etc.

It is time, though. I really want to get down to a weight that is not an embarassment. I want my BMI to be in a healthy range. I am really hoping that tonight's weigh in is encouraging, rather than depressing.

I think I will stop drinking water by 3 pm.

Can't wait to see WI results, Cam! I bet they're good!

I've been lurking, but no time to post. Looks like you're on track for January.

Hang in there!!

Down 3.2!!!!! I can't believe it! That is the largest loss I have ever had in one week on WW.
I am committing myself to doing core another week. :cool1: I may have a tough time eating only core foods because of dinner commitments on Thursday and Sunday where I have no idea what will be on the menu. I will do my best, though!

Thank you so much to everyone who supported my efforts through this week.

Off to change my ticker! :teeth:

Wow! That's AWESOME!!

Maybe I should try core!!

CONGRATS!!!

 :cheer2: Great job on staying on Core and super congrats on the loss! That has got to feel great! :cheer2:

Keep up your good work and you'll get through your dinner commitments fine too.

Thank you so much, Julie. It wasn't as hard to do as I'd feared. Now I am so mad at myself for not trying earlier. I had already been eating a lot of core foods but I was doing that so I could "save points" for junk food, and that was my downfall. I would LOVE to hear that you've tried it and enjoyed it. Your life is so crazy busy that you'd probably really benefit from cooking large quantities of things like whole wheat pasta, veggies, soups, etc. so that they are easy to grab, even when you are in a rush.

The one thing I hadn't given much thought to is a HUGE change I made this week. I drink a lot of coffee. I have always used creamer or half&half, though often I've had access to sugar free creamer and used that. This week I ONLY used skim milk in my coffee. I have to conservatively estimate that I saved 2-3 points a day by doing that.

The major difference between now and before is that I really do not obsess about the snack foods in the closet. I just don't want them or need them. My dinner is usually so satisfying that I have no desire to put another bite in my mouth after dinner. I hope this feeling of satisfaction continues.

Anna -- Thank you so much for your support!

GREAT job on the coffee!! That's a terrific change. I did a similar thing with tea. I used to put sugar in it, and now I stick with skim milk. I don't even miss it anymore. It sounds like you've been making such terrific progress, that you don't even miss the junk. I hope to get there one day!! Way to go!!!!

Thanks, CJK! I am hoping that lots of little changes to every day habits will make a difference.

Went to the gym tonight and did a 5 minute warmup at 4mph (.33 miles) and then did 3 miles in 40:08 (13:23 pace)

My new running shoes arrived tonight and I wandered around the kitchen in them for a while. The way the arch hits feels great, but my toes feel a bit crowded. I am reluctant to try them for any long distance -- I'd hate to end up with blisters. I guess I could take my old shoes with me to the state park and if the new ones aren't comfortable, I could change into the old ones. I had really hoped these would be a great fit since my old ones have been discontinued. I am really disappointed because I didn't fall in love with them from the first like I did with my current shoes. I have to face the fact that my old ones are just very heavy to take 26.2 miles. The new ones are a bit lighter. Not sure the trade-off in comfort is worth it. UGH!

Sorry to hear you don't like the shoes. Is there anywhere near that you could get some fitted? I know here there is a place that puts you on a TM and then on a track w/ sensors to check your footfall, then actually makes shoes for you - and they're relatively inexpensive. People say that they feel like you've worn them forever when you put them on.

Great job on the coffee creamers. I switched to skim when I switched to decaf so I really didn't notice the change.

Have a great weekend!

Cam,

You are doing a great job with Core! That is so great that you are down over 3 pounds! :yay: :yay: :yay:

I'm sorry to hear about your new shoes.... I love my old broken in tennis shoes! Anytime I get new ones, it takes me weeks to break them in. I have to be getting some news ones soon too. Two years in the same tennis shoes is probably too long.

Hope you have a great weekend! :sunny:

hi cam!
you are doing a great job!!!!!!!!! and congrats on the weight loss! but sorry about your shoes--no fun!

have a great weekend!

Hey Cam,

I've been looking around here and saw how great you're doing and wanted to say congratulations. :cool1: That's an awesome weight loss. Congrats on staying with core. Sounds like it's working well for you.

You are an inspiration to us all.

Keep up the great work. You will make your marathon goal!!! :cheer2:

Hi Cam,

Sorry to hear that the shoes were not what you were expecting. Maybe after you wear them a few times, your toes won't feel so squshed! Only time wil tell.

You're doing a great job with core!! Keep it up

Have a wonderful weekend :)

Cam, you need to try again on the shoes. Squished toes are not nice. Good Luck.

Your eating and workouts are great. Have a great week! :sunny:

Hi Cam!

Congrats on the successes you've had recently..you're doing great!!

About the shoes...word on the street is that you need to get them one half size bigger than your regular shoes. That should help the crowding issue and will also allow for room as your feet will swell up a little when exercising. I did it with the ones that I've bought and they work great!

Hope this helps...

Have a great day!

Thanks, everyone, for stopping by. I can't believe it has been so long since I have journaled here. Things have been going along pretty smoothly as far as the eating is concerned. I have not had any problems at all sticking completely to core foods with only 2 exceptions. I even baked my most favorite cookies in the whole world on Friday and did not taste the batter or even a fragment of a cookie. I know I have no restraint and if I had given in to taste one I'd have allowed myself to use weekly points to eat more. So, I just didnt' do that at all. That is so HUGE for me!

On Saturday I did my 12 mile LR on the treadmill at the gym and did an overall pace of 14:40/mile. I stopped partway through and had a snickers marathon bar when my stomache started growling. It was 5 points, but I earned at least 12 activity points with the LR so I didn't hesitate to eat it.

On Sunday we were at our best friends' house all day and they had so many of my favorite munchies including hummus and chips and pistachios and mini franks in croissant dough, etc., etc. I ate an apple while everyone else at hors d'euvres and munchies. For dinner there was pasta in vodka sauce and beef patties and a chicken breast dish that had artichokes and other veggies in it but was obviously cooked with some kind of oil. I ate a lot of the chicken and artichokes and it probably wasn't too bad for my core plan. I didn't touch the birthday cake, either, and I cut it and was so tempted to lick frosting off my fingers. I feared triggering a sugar craving, though, so I didn't. We left right after cake and presents and I ate a banana in the car to hold me until I got home.

So, that was 4 challenges last week that I got through -- the special olympics awards reception Thursday night, the cookie baking Friday, long run-induced voracious appetite Saturday and Sunday, and the birthday party Sunday. All went as well as I could have hoped.

Tonight is my normal WW night, but I have a doctor's appointment at 6:30 so I may have to find another time to weigh in, or wait until next week.

Unfortunately, I am having some irregular hearbeats again and am hoping that this is not a return of my sustained vtach which necessitated the 4 heart surgeries. The doctors always said they weren't sure that the january 05 surgery was a permanent cure, but I never was willing to consider that it might not be. Now, I have to face the possibility of a fifth surgery and may have to decide whether to hold out until after the marathon in the hopes it doesn't progress too quickly. Too much to even consider right now. My immediate concern is the breathlessness that I am feeling much of the time -- this was one of the worst symptoms of the sustained vtach but was prevalent when the condition got pretty severe. So, while I've been concerned over the past year about my lack of lung capacity for running intervals, I thought it was residual from 10 years of the heart condition. I am hoping to get some answers tonight.

Thanks again, all my WISH buddies, for all of your kind words and support.

Oh, one last thing -- I wore the new Brooks Ariels for my 12 mile LR Saturday and ended up with very strangely shaped and located blisters. So, they are going back and I am going to try something different.

Cam - hope you get good news at the DR. You have put so much time and energy into training that it would be a shame if you can't run the marathon.
Hope you a feeling better soon.
