Cam's New Lease on Life Journal (comments welcome!)

Congrats on DLand! You will do AWESOME in January.

While walking our 8 miles Sunday morning we were discussing that training for distance walking is NOT a way to lose weight and most gain while doing it. Not particularly encouraging, but....

Hope you have a good weekend! Your training seems to be going well. Don't forget to take some Cam down time, too!!

Thanks, Julie. And your comment about weight loss and distance walking must surely be true -- I have lost less weight and at a much slower rate in every single week where I was exercising (walking) a lot. Of course, in all fairness, I was also eating many of my APs because the training made me so hungry AND I have used energy bars on the days when I've done long training sessions (more that 5 or 6 miles) and those points add up very quickly.

That being said - even in the past 5+ months, when I have not lost an ounce, my clothes fit differently, my rings are falling off, and my hips/booty are significantly narrower than they were in April. So, even if the scale doesn't show progress, the body shape and size may.

Very good point about body shape. I hadn't ever thought about the power bars/gels being high count, but it makes sense. There is no way to do marathoning without them though. With all the walking you are building muscle. Long term, that will definitely make a difference.

After reading your experience with the DL half, I am tempted to give it a try in 2007 ...

:wave2: Hi Cam!!!

I know you are frustrated with the weight loss...but wow you really have such a wonderful, healthy attitude! Besides....to me you have celebrated so so so many successes with all the races you have run...including both of those half marathons!!! My goodness....you really are such an inspiration to me :grouphug: . You are making excellent food choices and getting all that training in meanwhile taking care of the family :goodvibes !!! So proud of you Cam!!!!

How is your DD doing at U of D? I think about her often and remember my days (long long ago) of being there :). I wonder if she is in one of the dorms I stayed in back then LOL! I was an RA at Newcastle/Cannon in my Senior Year!!! Good memories there :). GO BLUE HENS!!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Have a great weekend! Good luck with your LR this weekend :). I'm going to be heading out on Saturday morning and hoping for the best myself :goodvibes .

And thanks for posting in my journal! You are just so sweet!!! Something you wrote a few posts back to me really brought tears to my eyes...I appreciate your support so much!!!! THANK YOU!!!! :grouphug:

Anna -- Thank you so much for posting here. I definitely think you should plan on doing the DL 1/2 marathon. Next year it will be Labor Day weekend -- 2 weeks earlier than this year. And I am sure the course will be changed and so much better. Or maybe they will do a staggered start like they are doing for WDW this January.

Thank you so much, AmyBeth, for posting here. I always look forward to what you have to say and you are always so kind and supportive. Thanks for asking about Jenn. She seems to have adjusted to college life pretty well, notwithstanding the call while we were in California. Academically, she is really struggling, but I am confident she will recover and do fine. I know she really enjoys the social aspect of college life and was just elected floor senator for the student congress. She lives in the Russell dorm complex and has made a lot of friends -- it makes me feel good to know she has people around to walk to and from class and band, etc. with. The UD/New Hampshire game last weekend was awesome, even though UD lost by 3 points. It was exciting. This week's game is away and the band is attending a college band festival in Allentown, Pa. Should be fun. I had hoped to go but will be working almost every waking moment for the next several weeks of my life.

Food was good yesterday. Having grilled chicken in the fridge and using that for lunch and dinner was a great option. Good protein and little effort. I am hoping to get back into the habit of cooking significant amounts of food on Sundays to carry me through the week. I didn't get out of work last night until after 8 so I didn't make it to the gym. My training is going to be really sporadic through the end of October while I cope with all these new, deadlines on huge projects. Not fun. And I can really feel myself getting edgy when I don't get to the gym

This weekend shouldn't be too much of a challenge, food-wise. DS's cross-country meet in the morning and then getting together with some friends from out of town for most of the day. Then probably taking Jenn shopping for khaki's tomorrow evening. Will spend all of Sunday in my office and possibly have dinner with our best friends. I just have to remember to make good choices.

The scale was down a few pounds this morning from my weigh in on Tuesday, but I've decided I am only going to log my weight from my WW weigh-ins. If I could break myself of the habit of stepping on the scale every morning, that might be good, but not writing it down every day may help me not get bogged down with the small daily fluctuations. I am only going to move my ticker based on weight watchers weigh ins. I am really hoping to see that ticker scale move (literally) after Tuesday night's meeting.

Sunday, October 8--
Today is going to be a good day. I already did my 10 mile training session and now I am going to work for many hours in the hopes that it will make tomorrow so much easier if I get a lot of stuff out of the way today.

My mile times:
1 -- 14:35
2--14:47
3--15:10
4--15:26
5 -- 14:58
6--15:04
7--15:27
8--16:00
9--16:47
10--16:13

total time: 2:34:31 for 10 miles -- avg pace 15:27

I earned 11 APs, including for my jogging intervals. I wasn't going to use them today, but many get used just on the food I need before and during the walking/jogging session. I kind of consider that a "wash" but will still be careful today.

I am hoping to cook quite a bit tonight when I get home so we'll have grilled chicken in the fridge and a nice ham & bean soup, too. I also picked up some grilled carrots and some marinated mushrooms at the farmers market yesterday and will look forward to incorporating those into a nice dinner and some good lunches.

Food today:
B (before training) -- peanut butter & jelly on lite english muffin (4)
during training -- 1/2 power bar, sport beans, powerade (4)
after training -- turkey on english muffin (3); frozen fruit bar (1); coffee w/cream (1)
L: lean cuisine panini (6); pretzel crisps (3)
Dinner: bite of fried chicken breast (2); turkey ham & soup (8); baked potato w/fat free cheddar and marinated mushrooms (8)

WW healthy eating guidelines:

Great 10 miler! Your pre/post training session food looks ok too. I was always a big banana fan for post run food when I was training. :teeth:

Have a great week! :sunny:

:thumbsup2 Cam!!! Great job on your 10 miler!!! I'm sooo nervous...my first 10 miler is this Saturday (yikes)! Sounds like you are doing a great job keeping up with the training plan. From here on out it's going to be tough for sure...but it's so inspiring to see everyone get out there and accomplish so much! Keep up the great work and have a wonderful week!!! :sunny:

Cam -

What a great Sunday you had!! Nice 10 miler!! And the food sounds yummy :)

I'm anticipating my first 10 miler this Saturday...I'm very curious to see how I hold up :)

Anyway, great job with everything...I really enjoy seeing your successes!! Hope you have a great day today!

Thank you so much, Jamie, Tracey, Anna, Scott and AmyBeth! I really appreciate the support and always look forward to the feedback I get here. Especially when many of you are runners and much more fit than me -- it must make my 16+ minute miles look like a stroll. I really need the encouragement to remind me that getting out there and doing any distance is a good thing, even if I'm not running and can't post any impressive mile times. When I get discouraged about how I am totally un-athletic, it helps to know that you guys think I am doing something meaningful. :grouphug:

Well, eating yesterday was a disaster -- so much for watching what I ate and taking it easy. I was cooking for about 2.5 hours last night after working all day, and ended up eating way too much of what I was cooking. Some of that was because of being hungry and part of it was just out of control. I used up all my APs as food points and used some flex points as well. I hadn't used any flexpoints at all this week until Saturday night's pizza dinner, so I still have plenty of FPs, but using them 2 days before weigh in always results in a higher weigh in and then on the rest of the mornings this week, my weight will start to drop and level out -- of course, my weight watchers leader will only see the result on the scale which reflects the weekend binge. UGH!

My "first" weigh in (after rejoining WW last week) is tomorrow night, and I had really hoped to see some progress (and probably would if not for the pizza Saturday night and my out of control eating last night), but the scale was up a couple of pounds this morning. I am hoping that two solid days of eating right will help get it down some.

Food today:
B: 2 egg whites on wheat toast (3.5); coffee w/creamer (1)
L: garden salad w/fat free italian dressing (0); homemade soup made with turkey ham, potatoes & cabbage & taste of bean & turkey ham soup (4); weight watchers salisbury steak (4); broccoli (0)
S: weight watchers yogurt (1); multigrain honey graham rice cakes (1)
D (9 pm): cabbage soup (4)
snack (11 pm): rice cakes (3); 4 junior mints & 1 mini tootsie roll (3)
snack (1:30 pm): bean soup (4); small pc fried chicken breast (3)

Exercise: I won't get any in today because of my crazy work schedule. If I get out of here on time, I hope to see our friend's show "the Class" tonight and then "Heroes" -- it is the only tv I watch at all, ever.

First off, you are the opposite of "unathletic". Girl, you have just completed a 1/2 marathon and are training for a full. Nobody who is unathletic can do that. Second, don't worry about time. I ran/walked my first marathon, walked my second, and ran/walked my third. By far, the hardest one for me was the one I walked. And now I am so out of shape, I don't think I could run for more than a minute. (ugh!) You are doing great, and should be extremely proud of all you have accomplished!

As for the WI, drink lots and lots and lots of water. I think the fat cells can't swim, drown, and leave your body :lmao:

Hi Cam,

Sweetie, you are an athlete! You have completed several 1/2 marathons, 5Ks, etc , and you are signed up to do the full in January! That is wonderful! :thumbsup2 You are going to do a great job in January! :cheer2:

I hope your weigh-in goes well for you today! :wizard:

Have a great Tuesday! :sunny:

Thank you so much, Anna and Tracey! You guys are the best :lovestruc I hate to be so needy, but really appreciate the support. I don't want to get discouraged and backslide, so I am absolutely hanging on to all that you guys remind me of. Thank you, thank you, thank you! :teeth:

Food today:
B: oatmeal (4); coffee w/creamer (1)
L: Greek salad w/dressing (6); lots of extra lettuce (0)
D: cabbage soup w/ham & potatoes (4); baked potato w/mushrooms (3)
Dessert/snacks: small caramel apple (3); pretzel crisps (6); lite popcorn (1)

My friend made me a low point caramel apple with nuts and I am absolutely craving it! I wanted one saturday night but knew they were a huge number of poings, so I didn't even buy it. Now, I get to satisfy the craving in a very WW-friendly way. I am holding out on eating it and will probably have it after lunch as a reward for surviving that much of the day.

Thanks, Tracey!

Well, now I have a couple minutes to post about my hellish day yesterday. I was here until 1 in the morning trying to meet a midnight deadline on 6 huge documents and all the supporting papers. We ran into technical problems beyond our control around 10 and tried for the next 3 hours to overcome the problems, without success. By the time I got home, close to 1:30 a.m., I was hungry and frustrated and ate a small piece of fried chicken and some ham & bean soup. The whole time I was doing that I knew I shouldn't and yet told myself that I was entitled because of the stress of the day and the anticipation of many more stresses in the coming days. I have realized in recent years that I tend to eat emotionally -- celebrating or "medicating", and I know I need to stop doing that.

I wasn't too far over points last night and had the FPs to spare, but I'd still prefer to have stayed in control.

I am taking Anna's advice today and drinking lots and lots of water -- her theory of the fat cells drowning had me :rotfl: -- a much needed chuckle today. I hope I have some progress to report and that my ticker can slide a bit after weigh in tonight. [where is that fingers-crossed smilie?]

Besides everything else, in the middle of dealing with last night's crisis this morning and getting to my office right after 7 (on about 4.5 hours sleep), I missed a meeting. :guilty: That has never happened in my life. I just really have to get it together and recover and go forward. Work stress is just blowing me away and is definitely impacting on my ability to even make time to deal with normal everyday personal commitments and stress.
The only good news I've gotten recently is that I don't have to move to a hotel 2 hours away this weekend for two weeks to work on a project. Thank God!

Hi Cam!

Just wanted to say "hang in there"!! Stress is tough to deal with but I know you are the kind of person who can overcome it and move on :) Sorry to hear about all of the work related issues up there and I certainly hope things get easier for you sooner, rather than later :)

Have a good day Cam!

:grouphug: Cam,

I hope things get better for you at work soon. :goodvibes You are in my thoughts and prayers. :grouphug:

Have a great Wednesday! :sunny:
