Adding Campus Rep Experience to your Résumé

You’ve worked very hard this season; now how do you effectively publicize your accomplishments to potential employers? Often your résumé is the only tool a hiring manager will see, so it’s important to give it the attention it deserves. Here are a few tips about how you can best tout your Campus Rep experience on your résumé.

Most recruiters will recommend that you begin your résumé with a strong opening statement that entices the reader to learn more. The average time given by recruiters to scan a résumé is between 10-30 seconds, and if your first sentence does not pop off the page they may not want to continue reading.

A good first statement contains the following information:

* Who you are
* What your experience is
* What field you are in

Here are a few examples of how you can use your Campus Rep experience in this statement.

* "Recent College Graduate from Mickey Mouse University with a degree in Management and field marketing experience with The Walt Disney Company"
* "Multilingual Public Relations major with experience representing a Fortune™ 100 company"
* "Broadcast communication major with experience in marketing to millenials"

Statements two and three give you the opportunity to describe how you work. Some people can do this in one statement. For others, it may take two. Some examples of these statements are:

* "Organized, accountable and adaptable in a fast-paced and demanding environment. Exceptional leadership skills and proven performance working with a team."
* "Dedicated and self-motivated, contribute to team by offering creative solutions to achieve goals. Proven ability to multi-task and manage deadlines."

Now that you have created your opening statements, you will begin to list your relevant experience, and tailor what you include based on the position and/or company to which you are applying. Using bullets rather than lengthy paragraphs is also recommended to make the résumé easier to scan.

So, then, how might you display your Campus Rep experience?

First of all, keywords are important. Try to use active words such as represent, illustrate, communicate, lead, prepare, negotiate and deliver; and words that show responsibility and achievement such as representative, point person, liaison, mentor, strategy, plan, performance, goal and results.

Here is one example of how your Campus Representative experience could appear on your résumé if you were pursuing a job in marketing:

Disney College Program Campus Representative, Fall 2008 Season
Represented the Disney College Program and The Walt Disney Company on Mickey Mouse University campus and executed recruitment marketing strategy as set forth by the marketing team, recruiter and campus representative team

* Increased awareness of the Disney College Program presentation information to campus population of 36,506 students and faculty members by means of e-mail, signage, hand-to-hand delivery of brochures, personal testimonials and other field marketing tactics
* Reached presentation flow goal by 127 percent and received top-tier reward in our earned incentive program
* Negotiated with newspaper editor to receive $150 in free ad space with an included editorial article
* Contributed to team effort to host E-Presentation session and build event awareness via classroom announcements, e-mail campaigns, directional signage and message display on north campus marquee

If you are pursuing a career in education, you would likely focus your accomplishments on relationships you built, presentations you made and mentoring you did. Political Science majors might tout working with alumni in various campus groups to create networks of support. Pick the experiences and accomplishments that will mean the most to your potential employer and you will definitely see better results.

A note of caution: one thing on which all résumé experts seem to agree is that you should not exaggerate or lie about your experience on your résumé. You could be caught in the interview, or worse, on the job where you can be immediately fired. Recruiters look at hundreds of résumés a month and can usually detect when someone has made a position appear to be more than it is.

One last tip nothing will kill a résumé faster than grammatical mistakes. Make sure to proofread (more than just spell-check!) and have a friend or advisor look it over as well. With the right key words, some careful tailoring and your personal touch you will be on target to flaunt your skills and achievements so they exhibit the best possible you.

Thanks! Hopefully that will come in handy one day!
