Camping question.Can I just go to Disney and pitch a tent?

Actually, Loop 2000 is a tent loop and Loop 2100 is a cabin loop. They are right next to each other. Even if you end up on one of the other cabin loops they aren't that far from Loop 2000. Here's a map of FW to show what I mean...

I am thinking about the tent thing for all of us.Think it may be our best bet cost wise.The only thing is we normally fly in so we would have to think about driving down instead and I am not sure how that will go over with the hubby as he would be doing all the driving and we are in Jersey so we are talking about a 18 hour drive and to then have to sleep in a tent?????? Not sure how he would feel about that but it something to consider thats for sure.Thanks once again for all your help!

How po'd would you be if they stayed in the cabin then and you and DH stayed in a tent?...That would give you and DH some much needed alone time with that many kids.. You already know that DH would love to be in a tent..

DH wanted to take the me and the kids camping and I said OK," a few days later I took his Jeep and partially traded it in on an RV"...

If it were me I would just get 2 value rooms, take a fridge(much cheaper than renting one),and use the microwave in the food court. To be honest, when we were there we hardly ate breakfast because we still so full from the night before, and lunch and dinner were in the parks or at other resorts. If you get the dining plan your food will be much cheaper if you plan to eat on property a lot. We paid 560.00 for our dining plan and our food would have been 1278.00. Just a suggestion!!

You say you would need to drive if you flew in?? Not really. There are 7 of you right??

You are allowed two 50 lb containers of checked luggage per person. One carryon (40 lbs), and one personal item per person (10 lbs). That means almost 1000 lbs of camping stuff you could bring.

Whatever you do, don't secretly squeeze an unofficial person into the cabin/sleeping bag outside. Besides being way too tight, that person would not have a resort ID card, so s/he wouldn't be able to go to EMH's, etc.

If you travel during a lower season and rent DVC points for $10 per point, Sun - Thurs in a 2 bedroom villa that sleeps 8 would cost as little as $220 per night. Way cheaper than a cabin alone and more bathrooms.

I think you should just book a value resort and get the two connecting rooms. I just went in July, and we ate most of our meals at the food court and were perfectly happy!

If you book just one cabin (max. 6 people) then the 7'th person cannot jump on the Disney express (DME).

I'm pretty sure that in order to pitch a tent you have to have booked a campsite.

The OP was planning on booking a campsite, just not using it, thinking that this way her DH would be able to use DME and get a resort ID, etc.

But, this is way more expensive than just getting 2 rooms at a Value.

Just a quick comment for others planning a combination cabin and camping trip. Whike 2000 and 2100 are close, they are separated by a small canal. 2100 (cabin loop) backs up to 1100 (camping loop) and there is even a path between the two. This also provides access to a comfort station if the cabin is bursting and you're concerned about bathroom space. I've stayed with 5 people in the cabin, and we did not need another bathroom. It worked fine, with some showering at night and others in the am.

Since there are just two adults, I believe you can get guaranteed CONNECTING rooms. If you just say adjoining, then you have to go outdoors to get from one to another. Just make sure they note "connecting" on your ressie. Have fun!

The DVC suggestion is a good one. You'd get two bedrooms and a full kitchen more than likely at OKW or SSR. And a jacuzzi in the master bedroom. Wander over to the DVC rent/trade board and take a gander.

Did some math

1 night at value two room during your stay (Early May right?) = $184

1 night in cabin + cheapest campsite during your stay= $326

That gives $142 a day of extra money to counteract not cooking in the cabin.

Dining plan for your family is about $280 a day. The lodging savings could counteract that.

Don't know if you have your heart set on FW but it might be cheaper and a whole lot more comfortable to rent points from a dvc member. In February 2005 we did just that. There are five in our family. We had a nephew with us and my inlaws. Thats 8 people. A lot of dvc members will rent out their points if they can't use them and don't want to bank them. The average price is $10 a point. Five nights ( sun - thurs) in a two bedroom at OKW is 150 points. It's gorgeous, you have plenty of room. Full kitchen, two baths, sleeps eight and is a whole lot more comfortable. If you do the calculations it is only about 200 more than FW for the same two nights during peak season. My sister is a dvc member and she sugested this to us. She was already using her points. We are planning on doing this again this spring. Let me know how you make out. Good luck.
