camping on the way down

We are making our reservations to camp on the way down. Here's my question... when we stop to camp for the night, do we have to unhook from the truck? It seems like for safety purposes we would need to. That's what my gut is telling me, but I thought I would ask the pros on here.

You didn't say what kind of rig you have but in most cases as long as you are fairly level it would be okay. We did it once with our fifth wheel and even ran the three slides out. Just remember, if you have a refrigerator, it must be level to work correctly. Running it not level, for any long length of time, will burn it out.

We have a hybrid trailer with one slide and three beds that fold out. We pull with a Ford F150. The plan is to open only two of the beds, plug into electric, hook up to water and that's it. if we can leave the camper attached to the truck, that would be great. We are staying at KOAs on the drive down.

I do it all the time with our travel trailer. I disconnect the 7-way plug from my tow vehicle, lower the hitch jack to take some weight off of the vehicle suspension, lower the stabilizer jacks, connect the 30-amp electrial line and the water. In about 5 minutes, I am inside with AC on ready to go to bed.

Speaking of KOAs on the way down, has anyone ever stayed at the Charlotte/Fort Mill KOA or the Titusville, FL KOA? We are REALLY taking our time from PA and want to stay at both of those (spend the day at kennedy space center) and was just wondering if they are pretty nice. All the pictures look nice and they seem reasonable. How bad can it be since they're KOA?

I have found the reviews of campgrounds on rvparkreviews.com to be pretty helpful. Amazing how some people will rate 9 or 10 and the next will rate a 2 or 3 out of 10 for a score. But, if I see consistently high ratings, then I figure they were doing something right. I have not posted enough on the boards here to add links, but you might want to try:

We have a hybrid and do this all the time. I just drop the stabilizers and plug in. I fill the freshwater tank at home so there is no need to hook up the water. I leave the umbilical hooked up to the truck, too. There should be no power drain off the truck battery as long as you are hooked up to a power source.

I have also heard that it is best to unplug the light cord from the truck if you plug into electric as it could back feed to the truck. Don't know if that's true but it only takes a second to do just remember to plug it back in before you leave.

Not sure what your sleeping arrangements are like, but we can turtle it and still sleep four, which was all we needed.

You should have no power feeding into the tow vehicle through the umbilical. If you do, you need to take you trailer in for service ASAP. You can check this with a multitester - no RV owner should be without one.
