WELL we beat you to the craziness!! All 7 of us---Me,DH and 5 kids--- Flew to tent camp in FW in JULY!!! I think our crazy meter blew up!!

Hrm...so it is possible to fly out there with camping gear. Would you all be willing to enlighten me just how it is done?
I'm trying to convince my grandparents that the extended family needs to go to WDW together (my grandparents imparted their love of Disney to their descendants) and my grandmother loves camping (and it's the cheapest option). Only problem is that it's only really feasible for one of my aunts and her family to drive down (the rest of us live in California and England) and it wouldn't be fair to make them haul down gear for the rest of us.

Hi! I made a new thread out of your post, so more people will see it! Have a great day! :)

I don't know how much "gear" you will have, but yes it is possible to fly and camp. I just came back from the Fort from a 10 day solo tent camping trip. Had 2 checked bags. The one bag contained the bare minimum of gear:

Tent
Tarp
Blankets/Sheets/Pillow
40 ft. extension cord
Power Strip
Lighting/Timer

I'm sure with an entire family going you could consolidate and get more camping gear with everyone taking certain items.

You most definitely need to travel on SW if possible. The benefit there is you can check 2 50 lb bags/containers per person on SW.

The only disadvantage to SW is that you can't use the Remote Airline Checkin on SW, so have to have all your stuff brought back to the airport under the DME bus. Some extra tipping will be involved.

If you would let me know how many of you would be flying, and what airline, I could give you an estimate of how much "stuff" you could bring.

AmericanItGirl-I'm doing the same thing myself for the first time this Aug. we can work through this together (we've tent camped at FW before but had a car-this year it was cheaper to fly). First, I'm taking just me and my DD8 and DS5 so I'll be responsible for a lot of things and second, we tent camp anyway so that part won't be new. Here's what I have so far.

1) I want airconditioning!!! So, I bought a window A/C and will ship it down and back FedEx (varified the airline wouldn't allow it boxed and checked as baggage)

2) Each person in my party will have the max. allowable luggage size and weight used (you'll want to have a large suitcase for each child available). My luggage set only had 2 large pieces so I just picked up another large piece at a garage sale for $4 (don't care what it looks like I only intend to use it once. Each person will have their one carry-on, one personal item, and one quart bag of liquids (make sure you count the kids in your total allotment even if they're not the ones lugging it). I will be taking the umbrella stroller for DS5 at the parks-I anticipate having bags in it and looped to it while at the airport.

3) My tent would not fit into luggage that was within the limits. So, rather than ship the tent down and back and have nothing to show for my $$, I choose to buy a new more compact tent. This came in its own zipper bag like a duffel bag and will be one of our carry-ons. The tent came with small flimsy spikes that will stay in the carry-on. I will check metal heavy duty spikes and a mallet and will switch them out when my luggage arrives. I will not check the tent and risk having my only shelter separated from me (lost or delayed). I will take the airmattress in my carry-on, sheets are less important and can be checked.

4) Practice, Practice, Practice. We've been pitching the new tent (just me and DD8 but she's been doing this with me since she was 5), using window A/C, cooking (both creating a menu-I won't charcoal in Aug. heat) and deciding what will be packed or bought onsite, cleaning the dishes, and even the electrical cord configuration. We've been practicing things we learned on disboards like packing each days outfit in ziplocs to keep dry and ease my workload each morning. The kids need more practice with showering at the bath house. Our next camping trip will have all gear packed in suitcases just like it will for the real trip so we can make sure everything fits.

5) How important is it? Although it might be nice to have, unless it's used more than twice during the trip it probably won't go. Everything must be cut down in size ( I just bought a camping towel, very thin and still need to try, instead of packing bath towels, I have bought and practiced with the camping pillows-these work just fine, and I bought and need to practice with with emergency blanket-folds down to wallet size and don't anticipate needing at all in Aug. but peace of mind will be good, I may also use them as a table cover and are cheap and will be thrown away). I will be packing a fold-up electric griddle as the primary cooking source, I'm working to create a full menu of items that I can cook on it. Although the kids fold-up lawn chairs easily fit into the suitcase, mine won't, I will just have to sit on the wood picnic table or squeeze my tooshie into theirs.

I'm sure I'll think of more, let me know what you come up with.

i'm worn out just reading about all you have to think about. (did that make sense?)

One thing I packed with that allowed me to bring my chair is a large duffle, and I also packed as my other checked item, a plastic footlocker. That way I would have a place to lock a few things up. I never cooked while tent camping, so didn't have that stuff to bring. As the previous poster stated, small, but heavy stuff went in my carryon (batteries, air mattress pump, flashlights, rubber mallet, extension cord, power strip, etc.) Large, but light stuff went in my checked items. Linens, tent, clothing, etc. Risky, but I didn't worry about having my tent as a carryon. I was not camping to save money, but for the experience of Fort Wilderness. If problems arose, I would have just pulled out the CC and dealt with it.

OK, here's more (I knew I'd think of more, was there ever any doubt). If you haven't already thought of it you can do laundry at the campground so pack less outfits and plan the time to do it. It is quite expensive and the dryers didn't work very well and with Aug. humidity I'm not quite sure if I'll be able to hang things out to finish drying.

As another poster brought up packing a mallet in your carry-on, the TSA website indicates you can't bring tools that are over 7" long so check on your tools or check them. I will either check one or just push the spikes in w/my foot (it's a sandy bed and not dirt you tent on) and I have a small spike remover, or I may just look around for a dismember and borrow a hammer. Which brings me to a few more points, I fly for business but flying w/camping gear is a whole new ballgame for me and I was so taken with some of the items listed on the TSA website that I actually took some notes, no matches are allowed in carry-on or checked bags (so buy there or borrow), plastic cutlery can be carried on but metal knives must be protected in checked bags (I'll probably put mine inside tupperware) and I'm still working on the skewers but will probably stick them in some cork. My second point is that campers are generally very nice and helpfull. I'm not going to hesitate to ask to borrow an item from a fellow camper if a need should arise.

As far as a duffle bag, you can just about forget it. With all the baggage fee changes going on, each bag I pack has to be the maximum size allowed by the airline and a duffle just isn't going to do it. I can't have packing space cut in half just to get that chair there. As I said before, I'll just borrow another campers, I'm sure I'll find some time while my neighbor is out to test their chair out.:rolleyes1

The duffle I use is huge and is of the maximum size allowed by the airline.

It is similar to this one. http://bigduffles.com/duffel_bags/wp-rb36/

Thoughts I had, are you renting a car when you get to town? If so why not go buy what you need(the heavy stuff), pre scout your list on where you need to go ....... I did not see anything about a cooler..... Beer at night is always nice....

I won't be renting a car but maybe the OP is, she also indicated that at least one family in the party may drive in leaving them some options for running to a store for needed items (or offsite laundry) or maybe not bringing a lot of items but a few of the bulkier ones may be a nice touch.

Collapsable cooler, maybe two. Will refill with ice and am starting to wonder about the refillable mug option. If my cooler is really too small to take all of the $2 (unless it's gone up) ice anyway and I end up w/in short walking distance of a fill center, what stops me from stopping in twice a day to fill my mug with only ice for my cooler and would pay just one fee for the entire week. Anyone got any thoughts on this one.
