*****camping Advice Needed*****

Hi All, we are planning on going camping next week the three of us to the Lake District, still havent decided on a campsite yet.

This is all new to us but Im hoping some of you experienced campers can help me.

We have just bought a 2 bedroomed tent, sleeping bags, airbeds & lights. We have plastic dishes, cups and cutlery, planning on taking some food and a disposable bbq.

Could you advise me if there is anything else we should really take with us??? We are total Novices to this

I have read about electric hook ups??? This may sound a funny question but is there something/leads we need to buy to be able to get this???


Any Reccommendations of a campsite which will be suitable for us in the Lake District want something with facilities for DS Adam (6) ie Play Park, in a nice location. Ideally with local shops/restaurants nearby

Any help advice I will be extremely greatful

we have a electric cable thing for the hook up, but i dont know where dh got it from.

Can't see that you've listed drink

If you want an electrical hook-up you'll need a "special" cable, you could get one from any camping/outdoor shop I would think, or I bet there are some on eBay.

For goodness sake make sure you take washing up liquid and a bowl and pan scrubber (make sure the pots are clean or you could get a tummy bug) and don't forget a good lamp and the toilet rolls, my parents took me and my sister all the way to Cornwall once and during the night we needed to go to the loo which was situated across the campsite.
Now remember this was back when lots of campsites didn't have many lights around the camp grounds and no mobile phones.
We struggled our way in nighties macs and wellies (yep it was raining heavily) aided by an old torch (which ate batteries) over to the communal toilet blocks and found that every one of the toilets had no loo paper left Luckily I had some clean tissues in my coat pocket which saved our dignity ...who wanted to use "izal" any way certainly not us Next day while we were out our mum made sure dad stopped the car at the nearby town shops for groceries and more loo rolls
Keep some bug repellant handy too "midgies" love to eat campers arms and legs. Most people I now swear by one of the skin care lotions Avon sell which keeps them off a treat.

sounds like too much hard work (did enough camping whilst in the army ), anyway i digress, can't help noticing your from the north east. pitch the tent in the back garden, commute to the lake district everyday and you'll save on the expense of "cable thingys" and pots and pans, an all the rest of the sundries

But if you go, have a great time.

Personally i'm not sure you'll need electric hookup if it's just a short break, they tend to be more for caravans I haven't been camping aside from festivals in a quite a while though so this may have changed (our family holidays when I was a kid were nearly all camping, though usually in our Volkswagen camper van and later a caravan) A couple of useful things I can think: Large water bottle (collapsible or not), pillows, a coolbox with ice blocks if bringing perishable food or even just to keep drinks cool, flip flops for the showers and a big umbrella for if you have to go outside the tent when it's raining (just saves having to deal with wet waterproofs if you're only going to the loo!) Definitely agree with chairs and a table too, it's so nice to sit on a chair rather than the horrible hard floor

Oh yes the wine will be travelling with us

Thanks , I will pack some loo roll, I was thinking of a wash up bowl and liquid, the car is going to be so full (for 3 days)

Yes very true Harry (would be easier)

Ill be looking for the cable things 2moro tho at the local camping store

I have to say camping isnt my thing - I like my home comforts to much, but I wanted to say I hope you all have a fantastic time and enjoy the experience. Ill keep my fingers crossed with the weather

I too like my comforts but DH says kids love camping and wants to go for a week or so one year
Do you have a camping stove and kettle so you can make a cuppa in the morning? That would be a essential for me I guess it would have to be longlife milk as you won't have a fridge?

Snap I love my home comforts to, this is what im worried about, I am very fussy to so I will have to put up with it and grin an bare it for a couple of days (I may even enjoy it)

Yes we are doing this for our DS Adam we have been told kids love it:rolleyes, I will let you all know about our first experience.

I love my cuppa tea aswell so that is really why I was asking about the hook up thingy, and for my hair straighteners I must have my hair done even if Im camping

Thanks for all your help everyone, Oh and we are only going if the weather is good not going to bother if the forecast is poor.

Parkfoot at Pooley Bridge is a decent one, or if you fancy something a bit wilder, try the National Trust one in Langdale. Hope the weather stays good.
