Ok...so, we most likely will have no real reason to hit the gulf coast this year with the oil spill threatening the coastline....so, I was wondering if anyone knows of a campground with or near a large waterfall in the southeastern part of the states? Ya know...something that youre allowed to swim under and play around in.When I say large..obviously I dont mean NIAGARA FALLS or anything...I mean something more than a trickle off of a ledge. Something photographically nice.

Ive heard of some Alabama State Parks with access to some waterfalls...anyone know about that?

BDR,

We are at Noccalula Falls campground this weekend in Gadsden, AL. You wouldn't want to swim at the falls, but there are some spots downstream that you could. Might be a little chilly, though. Edit: water level varies a lot in this watershed. The creek can go from almost dry to suicide rapids.

Not in Florida!

Do not go to Falling Waters State Park expecting to see a magnificent waterfall.

I made my family stop there on one of our summer trips to the panhandle.

This was in the pre-digital camera days. Otherwise, I would post a photo of my DD's posing with me next to the "waterfall." They are all giving me the loser sign on their foreheads.

Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon, Florida, has a pretty cool man-made waterfall. This park used to be a roadside attraction, kind of like Cypress Gardens or Silver Springs. There is a big, fake waterfall there. The campground is separate from the park. Also, you can't climb on the waterfall. But I know someone who has photos of himself and his then fiancee' cavorting in the waterfall. But those are also pre-digital camera, and who knows where those photos are now?

This is near the Desoto State Park in Alabama...has anyone ever been there? Carol? Vickie? Bama Ed?

BTW, the same thing applies to the Little River regarding timing. Mid summer the river may be at a standstill or it could be raging.

Blake..thats GREAT...how is the Desoto campground? Are the comfort stations ok? Is there a grocery store(Walmart or something similar) nearby? What would the water level be like this month? Low enough to be safe for the kids to swim there.....I mean THERE, wherever that picture was taken!!

Yeah...thats a major concern...I want to return with the same number of kids I leave with...the wifes funny like that!!

The closest big box store would be in Ft. Payne, which you would pass through on the way up. It is about 20 minutes or so....don't quote me on that...I usually go another way.

I believe the campground has been totally renovated. So everything should be nice. I haven't been there since the renovation.

I haven't been up to the canyon lately, but barring a huge storm water level in the summer tends to be low. The drainage up there is really small (the river runs down the backbone of the mountain), so water levels rise fast and drop fast. I wouldn't come if a lot of rain were in the forecast before or during your stay.

That pic you posted is at a very low water level. Here is a pic of typical winter flow.

Wow...thats crazy!!! That doesnt look quite as enjoyable or relaxing!!!

I wonder if any of the TN flooding is having an effect on the water level right now!
