campground near Universal

We have stayed at both Fort Wilderness and Tropical Palms on previous vacations. What would be the most convenient campground to Universal? What other campgrounds are in the area? This is going to be a non-Disney trip as we're taking advantage of the $85 deal.

It's funny you posted this because I was just researching this today. I can't get anything this month at FW and I want to do Universal as well. It's 10 miles from Tropical to US and 26 miles from Wekiwa State Park (little east of Orlando) to US. The price for TP was $49 a night and Wekiwa SP was $20 a night. Which one do you do when the price is so different and the mileage is almost triple. I'm thinking this might be a leave the camper at home trip and leave early Sat. morning do one park get a hotel then do another park Sunday and then drive home. I really enjoy camping but I think it's cheaper to hotel it if you figure gas and all. Someone told me there was a campground very near US. I mean like a couple miles. If this is true please post it.

We just got back from a trip a couple of weeks ago where we did Universal for the first time for the first part of our trip in a TT. I had read about Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake in Orlando so I reserved 3 days there. It is a city park with some full hookup sites for $18/night (all back-in sites). It's not Fort Wilderness but it is nice enough with a lake and a few nice playgrounds and also it is about 2 1/2 miles from Universal. Here's a link to it if you're interested.
