Campground in Atlanta Area

We (along with my brother, SIL, and niece) are going to WDW the first week of October.

On the way back, they are wanting to stay at a campground in the Atlanta area.

We've already discussed possibly staying at Stone Mountain.

Other than Stone Mountain, do you all have any suggestions for a good campground in the area?

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

When my guys and I did an Atlanta camping trip two summers ago, we stayed at Stone Mountain (yay!) and the Forsythe KOA (boo). So while I can't suggest a campground, I can say I wouldn't recommend the KOA in Forsythe. The staff was short some warm fuzzies, the campground itself was very unlevel and tired, the noise from the highway was LOUD, and the pool was so murky that my bravest, water-loving son didn't want to swim because he was convinced there must be a body floating down in the depths somewhere. (Okay, maybe his over-active imagination isn't the most accurate review of a campground, but there you go.) Maybe things have changed, but I wouldn't go back.

Sorry I can't give you a recommendation for another campground, but FWIW, we enjoyed SM campground a lot.

I'm curious about Stone Mountain. We camped there the year after the Olympics and the campground had been overhauled and was very nice. I've heard it's fallen into disrepair. True or not? I'd love to go back there. TIA

I thought they were great. The bath house was huge and very clean. The RV sites are close together, but each (most?) has a tiny deck and grill. When we were there, we stayed in a tent, and our site was very tiny, but absolutely surrounded by trees. And the lake is right at the campground.

I don't have fond memories of the pool, though. It was far too small for the size of the campground, and while we were swimming a little girl drowned and was resuscitated by another visitor. It took quite a while before emergency personnel arrived.

I've been talking with a gal there and it looks like all those tent sites are now RV sites, so it sounds like it's been overhauled again, perhaps?

I've stayed at Stone Mountain just for 1 night and the only comment I can make is the sights are VERY unlevel, So bring lots of leveling blocks. The bath houses were fine. (This was in 2008).

I've also stayed at the Forsyth KOA a couple of times. For an overnighter it's fine. They have pull through sites, the electric works, and the bath houses are fine. I don't know that I would want to stay there for a "vacation".

Cartersville KOA was clean but not much to do. Bath houses were clean and plenty of pull throughs.Our site was to the right of the ones in the backround and was gravel. A good overnight stop. Easy off and on the highway with two gas stations about a half mile away.

The kids and I camped at Stone Mountain for a week in 2002 and we had a great time. We were in our MH, so I'm not sure about the comfort stations. Try looking at Lake Lanier. We never stayed there, but I've heard it's nice......of course that was @ 8 years ago, but I know the campground is right on the lake. If they've had decent rain, it might be a pretty nice place too.

There are some nice State Parks in the area too. Red Top Mountain is just north of Atlanta a bit and is surrounded by Lake Allatoona, very pretty area. If you catch them right they also do an Iron Smelting program with blue grass music which is great.

There is also High Falls State Park south of Atlanta just a bit north of Forsythe. It has been a long time since I have been there, but I remember the falls being very pretty. The GA State parks really have a lot going for them in natural beauty.

Stone Mountain is definately a crowd pleaser with extra things to do. I have not used their campgroud as my husband dosen't consider it really camping , but we have taken our daughter there for the day quite a few times and always had a wonderful time. In the Fall they offer lots of programs like The Native American Pow Wow, Stone Mountain Highland Games (which is a family favorite with us), Yellow Daisy Festival, and Haunted trails around Halloween. Really if your staying a few days Stone Mountain might be the way to go.

We stayed at Stone Mountain during the last weekend in July. I would not recommend Stone Mountain for tent camping. The tent sites are not level and you have to dig into a mound of rock to even attempt to stake pegs. The comfort stations are awful, no doubt about it. A non-holiday weekend was $30 per night. We paid $39 a night at the Fort during Labor Day weekend. I don't know what the RV areas are like but tent campers are definitely treated like second-class citizens there. We won't be back.
