Any recommendations for a point and shoot like camera that will take the same quality pics as my DSLR? I want the same capabilities, but in a smaller camera that's suitable for travel. Thanks!

There are now many choices:

Panasonic & Olympus Micro 4/3 format

Sony NEX system

Fuji X100

Nikon's new 1 system (just announced but not released yet)

imo you can not get a p/s that is the same quality as dslr. maybe in bright light, but in low light the small p/s sensor size will explode with noise.

Very true but the cameras listed above are much smaller than DSLR's but will still handle low light noise much better than a p/s.

If the original poster doesn't mind interchangable lenses, then these may fit the bill.

Thanks!

I don't mind interchangeable lenses. I just want something less bulky for the parks.

Canon G12. I always have my G11 with me in my purse. Still a tad on the bulky side (can't stick in my pants pocket).

I think the first two Joe mentions are the closest, but really what you ask for does not exist. Do you really think we would lug along big cameras and many lenses if we could do the same thing with a camera a third the size that did not need accessories? :confused3 The other two will not give the image quality of a DSLR. If you are alright with that, then also consider the Pentax Q.

Sony's NEX cameras can give the same image quality as a dSLR because they use the same sensors as Sony (& Nikon & Pentax) dSLRs. NEX-5n has the same 16 mp sensor as used in some very good dSLRs, this is perhaps the best APS-C sensor available. Unless Sony's new 24 mp APS-C sensor is better, that one is used in NEX-7, A77, and A65.

The downside to the NEX series is the lenses are still about as large as dSLR lenses, they have to be to cover the same size sensor.

I wholeheartedly agree....
