I can't encourage you enough to get your son his own device for photos. My daughter took a disposable film camera on her first trip. We got pictures of roof lines and rear ends. Amazing to see what she saw! My girl is 7 now and has a better eye than me, so I have her carry my old Nikon point and shoot. I actually just found and am charging my old Sony Handycam for our trip in 7 days. I think it will be a blast to shoot some video. I second the thrift store, pawn shop, or yard sale idea. I'm not bringing my own high end Nikon DSLR because I don't want to babysit it. No way am I handing my kid a camera I'll be sad if she loses, either. However, do find something that works for you. The view from your son's viewfinder will be amazing!
