This might not be the right place to post this question, but thought I would try. I would love to get my 6 year old his first camera before our Disney trip at the end of May/ early June. Have any of you done this before, and if so, what type of camera would you recommend? Thanks!

I have purchased, within the last year, THREE point-and-shoot digital cameras at area thrift shops.
I paid less than $10 each (I paid $4 for one of them) for these working name-brand cameras.

You might also search for "digital camera" on eBay and Craig's List and see what you can find.

The reason these great little cams have been "abandoned" so readily is that today's cell phones have comparable (and better) built-in cameras.

I am a bit of a camera nerd. If you are looking to purchase a camera that will take great shots, grow with your child, and stand up to being dropped, I highly recommend the Canon Powershot D30. I have used this one for a while on hikes, when we go to the beach, snorkeling, and it works fabulously. My son loves it as well and I don't have to worry about him using it. It is a simple point and shoot, but has some nice features (fireworks, slo-motion, movie, underwater). It is drop resistant and water proof to a certain depth (30 feet I think). You can check it out on Amazon and it is $299. That might be more than you are looking at, but it is a great camera.

We have bought our kids the Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Cameras in the past and they were great for durability. I have boys so they are rough on stuff. If your child is not as rough on things you could go with any digital camera on the market.

I can recommend the Olympus Tough - yes it's a bit pricey but my one from 2008 is still going strong. Waterproof, drop proof, crush proof. It's a solid little thing that has survived 3 trips to Africa (totaling 9 months in the desert and being stolen by animals) plus a couple of Disney trips. Plus the quality is pretty good for a point and shoot.

Here's my take, I'm a theme park minimalist. For me, and my extended family, carrying stuff we don't need almost always ends up being more hassle than value. Less is more.

IMO, the best option is just to share the device you're bringing for yourself +a sturdy carrying case.

I've taken many extended family trips to WDW, and a number of family disasters. Six + extra stuff isn't often a good combination.

What will you do if the child: forgets it on a ride, drops it on pavement, drops it into water, fails to protect it in the rain, or simply gets tired of carrying it? I've experienced all of the above and more. It wasn't fun when my niece lost a purse w/$50. Her mother admonished her the rest of the trip. A nephew left an electronic device in a ride pouch. Another niece hopped in the pool with a watch on her wrist. A cousin hopped in the pool with a phone in his swim suit pocket.

Twice family children had items knocked out of the hands by strangers in the crowd. Time A- a child had a toy knocked out of her hand when we boarded the monorail. The toy fell under the monorail. Oddly enough, that device actually showed up at the TTC's Lost and Found office a few days later! Time B, a set of ears was knocked off a child's head during the parade, despite the chin strap. It was never seen again, and we LOOKED!

In all the above cases, many tears were shed.

If you do get a device, give the child permission to lose/break it.

I'm actually thinking of (still pondering) about getting my daughter for our upcoming trip one of the new fun instant print cameras (check out Amazon, there is a fujifilm one) (like polaroid back in the day) and a few packs of film. I think it would be fun for her to come back with actual tangible pictures and she can then put them in a nice photo book. Just something nostalgic I guess. Otherwise, we will just shoot with my phone camera and not worry about too many gadgets. Still thinking it over!!!!

We bought our daughter an inexpensive Canon from our local Target. It was about $80. I made a neck strap for her to carry it and we threaded the strap through a ziploc baggie that acted as a water repellent. She absolutely loved having her own camera! We did have to just let it go and not fuss at her about it. She did leave it at the table after lunch, but remembered it quickly and it was still there when we went back. (Yay fellow Disney families!) It was very interesting to see what pictures she captured, and I loved talking to her about composition and subjects. She's way more creative than I am and it was a great way for her to tap into that talent on vacation. :)

My son wanted to take his own pictures last year (he was 7) and I got him a Canon Powershot, great point and shoot camera. I don't know the retail price, I got it with some extra Air Miles I had, but I'm guessing probably in around $200.

I think first figure out how much you want to spend and go from there. I would get as good a quality as you can because 6 is old enough to be taking decent photos and you don't want them to get frustrated with something that is poor quality and they can't get a decent shot out of.

Mind, I should have added- the pictures kids' take can be lots of fun. I'm wholeheartedly behind periodically loaning a family phone/camera to a child for a bit.

Another option is vary what you carry. Maybe give the child an inexpensive camera, and only carry it around part of the trip. Epcot is a good pick, because it has less rides, and many of the rides are slow.

We have a Nikon Coolpix AW130. It's waterproof and shockproof. It's not a cheap camera, but it takes good pictures and is tough. Until we got a new DSLR in November, this was also the primary camera that DH and I used on trips.

I second smallworld101. How about an instant camera? The Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 is relatively inexpensive ($55-70) and prints a credit card size physical photo as soon as you snap a picture! They come in all sorts of fun colors like blue, pink, yellow, and white. They are bulkier than digital point-and-shoots, but light enough for your 6-year-old to carry. And you'll have physical photos as memorabilia

Our son was 6 during our last trip. I ordered 3 disposable cameras from Amazon (old school, for sure). But he loved it and most of the pics were pretty good! He still likes looking at them and we're planning on making a scrapbook with the shots. We didn't find them bulky or cumbersome at all. We're heading back in October and I'm thinking about getting a few for this trip also.

My MIL got DS a camera for his birthday to take to Disney. He was 5 or 6. I told her not to spend alot, and she ended up buying a point and shoot Canon digital around $80. For a 6 year old, I would not spend anymore than that.

We were having this same discussion in our house last night! My 6 year old has started to ask for her own camera to take pictures - I often hand her my iphone and lately she wants a turn with my dslr as well. I have a Nikon point & shoot from my pre-iphone days that I have let her use and I think it's small enough that I'm going to carry it for her. One of the things I'm really looking forward to is taking pictures in the park, and if she wants that joy too, who am I to stop her? :)

Several years ago we bought our son a disposable camera. He loved it. One of the neatest things was the interaction from the characters when they noticed a kid taking their picture. Most of them went out of their way for some real cool poses for him.

I like the idea of a thrift store camera. If he loses it, no big deal and it serves to gauge interest before plunking $$$$. If he shows interest, the you can take it to the next level and get him a more expensive waterproof camera.

When our kids were around 6/7 and 8/9, I got them a LUMIX waterproof camera in a bright orange color. It was fairly inexpensive for a new camera (i think it was around $140). I chose it because it is fairly small and waterproof. It's been great to have around when we go to the beach or pool, as I hate pulling out my phone or real camera for fear that it would get wet or get sand in it. We've taken pics in the water, etc.

I gave my daughter my old one when I upgraded when she was about 5. When it quite working I went ahead and bought her a cheap point and shot. The good thing about a digital is that you can delete the pictures of the figures or other pictures when they hit the button by mistake and at first you will have more of those than actual pictures. My daughter started taking pictures when my camera or phone at 3 and now at 9 she takes better pictures than me sometimes.
