If it is in your checked luggage you will be ok. If you try to just carry it on you probably won't get past TSA. I travel with many photographers and almost all of them have been denied carrying on their tripod.

I haven't looked into this yet, but we were wondering the same thing. We kind of thought that they wouldn't allow it b/c it could be a "club-like" object? I will keep a close watch here... :)

I would still make sure that you talk to the screeners when you are checking the non-carry-on luggage. I tried to bring my aluminum monopod a few months ago and was denied despite it not being on any forbidden lists. Since I had time, I was able to stick it in the checked luggage, otherwise I'm not sure what would have happened with it.

Did the airline personel say you couldn't carry it on before you got to security?

I was thinking of having a carry on size that I could go back and check. I was hoping to avoid baggage claim and letting ME handle all my checked luggage but I will go pick up that one bag as I really want the tripod my first night.

i would definitely have an alternative plan in case they deny it. i've had both tripods/legs and monopods denied here in oz domestically.

to make matters worse, i had a nice set of legs stolen last year out of my luggage flying internationally and the airline's liability (due to the warsaw convention) barely scratches the surface of repaying them. we don't have TSA here and they cut off about 90% of locks for 'inspection'.

Well, my monopod was too big to fit into any carry-on bag that we had (though still within the requirements so I was carrying it loose, and did ask about it fairly early on in case I wasn't allowed. The head of airport security even happened to be nearby and wasn't impressed when I mentioned that it wasn't on any ban lists. By this time, my wife was getting embarrassed (I really wasn't making a scene, honest!) and there was no one higher to appeal to and it really wasn't worth it, so I put it in our checked luggage was which in line for the quick checks that they get. I actually had considered tricks like tie-wrapping it to the stroller we had with us (which we don't have access to during the flight), but figured that I'd just see if I could carry it. A tripod may or may not be less scrutinized than a monopod which is basically a very solid aluminum pipe that'd be good for bopping people on the head with.

I was hoping to use it that night for fireworks at MGM (this was new year's eve) but it was a moot point anyway, as I was so sick that we left the park at 9:30pm! Then we didn't have any bedsheets/pillows for the second bed (my sister-in-laws were with us), bell services forgot one of our bags (fortunately they were able to find it quickly)... all in all, we've had better first days at WDW. :)

The moral is, assume that you won't be able to and find out for sure before you don't have a chance to put it in your checked luggage.

Groucho-thanks for your details! I looked at the schedule again and because Spetro isn't showing on our arrival day I think I'll just stick with my Gorrilla Pod for the first night and stick the tripod in the checked bag. That day is my birthday so I was hoping to get some nice firework shots. I think I will do OK with the IS on my Sony along with the Gorrilla Pod.

Sounds like you had a first day something likes ours last August. The rooms were not ready when we checked in so we went to Epcot and called around 4pm and were told they were ready and got our room numbers. We headed back to the resort around 8:30pm and when we got to the rooms one room had no furniture and the other had about 20 beds. We were quickly assigned new rooms with beds but we had to wait for our ME bags to be delivered and longer for a package I had UPSed to the resort. When I go back with my family in August this year I am not going to the park on arrival day.

I don't think you'd want a tripod for Spectro anyway, as it doesn't help much since you're shooting moving objects. If you shoot slow enough to need a tripod, you'll get motion blur from the floats moving. I tried using a monopod the first few minutes I shot Spectro but stopped bothering quickly as it really wasn't helping me at all.

The exception would be if you're trying for an artsy slow-exposure motion blur shot on purpose, of course............

It would be nice for the fireworks but as long as it's not too crowded, you should be able to find somewhere to attach the Gorillapod, I should think.

I used to put my monopod in checked luggage but recently started carrying it, after a talk with TSA. At 3 ounces it is much too light to cause any damage, and it looks a lot like a folding cane. So far, in about six flights, no one has even mentioned it at the security check.

They're having some technical difficulties this morning and the discount isn't coming up until you enter your address during checkout. The Slingshot 100 is $55.99 plus $8.99 shipping if you're not fortunate enough to live near an REI store (which I'm not).

I haven't placed my order yet, I can buy it on ebay for $57, free shipping from Canada but for that little of a price difference I'm not sure I want to chance buying it on ebay. Amazon has it for $70, free shipping.

Can anyone convince me I shoud spend $275 on this? or better yet, can anyone recommend something similar for less?

I've been researching (camera) bags for Mrs. YEKCIM and have seen several similar backpack style bags at B&H's site, for less money than $275, although I don't recall if they have wheels or not. Have you nosed around B&H's site and/or maybe the Tamrac or Lowepro websites?

How about the Tamrac 5258? No wheels, but looks a little bigger, and is about $100 less.

this holds all that and looks about the same but no wheels...however also less than 1/6 of the price. i bought this and while it's heavy to carry full, it holds camera body, 3 smallish( ie kit, 100mm, 50 mm) lenses , 2 larger lenses( 70-200, 28-135 IS)and assorted hoods. batteries and charger, filter, step ring and memory card wallets, lens and body manuals, another 8x10 notebook, all my camera cords, cleaning junk, flash light, empty space for my flash when i get it ;) and mucho room to spare. great buy, the little slot things move so you can move the lenses around there are 2 large and 2 small outer pockets as well that you can't really see in the photo( where i keep my books and cleaning junk).

for the price difference i'd go to tjmaxx and get a suitcase on wheels to stow it in:rotfl:
i didn't think you can take rolling coolers into wdw, don't know about something like this. i know some places have fire codes again rolling things

My problem is that I would put this on my back and forget to lower the handle. Then I'd hit stuff with the protruding "antenna".

I've never had a backpack on wheels so I am not sure I can fully comment on whether it is worth the money. I have had my eye on the Tamrac Expedition 5 backpack but haven't really done anything about it. I need a new bag so I'll be interested to hear your experiences if you do get this mobile backpack.

I have the Tamrac Adventure 9 backpack. I can currently hold my Nikon D50 with 18-135mm lens attached, 50mm f/1.8 lens, 70-300mm lens, 90mm lens, SB-600 flash and Gary Fong Lightsphere II diffuser. If I take the Gary Fong out I could easily get another good size lens. Even if I keep the GF in I can still get another smaller lens.

It also holds all my cables, batteries, charger, 7 SD cards, filters and other small stuff. There is also a compartment for a laptop and a small compartment for a light jacket or a small change of clothes (for me a t-shirt, shorts, socks,,, bla bla bla). It is pretty big and it is what I use to keep all my equipment together. I also have 2 lens pouches that attach to it and can be taken off to attatch to my belt.

On the side pouches I keep a gorillapod on one side and the battery charger on the other side.

The picture on their web site doesn't do it justice.

Here is a pic of mine full (actually almost full, I have more SD cards, filters and batteries in it now):
