Hi,

I am looking for advice on getting a new camera. This may be a bit long..

I currently own a Cannon Power Shot S2 15? I bought it 3 years ago. I do like it, kind of bulky sometimes, and takes a lot of blurry pics (could be operator error). But overall its been a good camera.

Problem is DH dropped it on the pavement a few months back. on the side that holds the memory card. It had been working fine, the other day I went to put the card back in and it was a no go. From the looks of it one of the prongs is sticking out.

I have thought about having it fixed. not sure there is a camera store around that will. and if it will be cost effective. or just buy something new.

I have been looking to get a smaller camera to carry with me all the time. Something with a lot of modes, and maybe something that can take good action shots, this may be a good time to get a new one.

So any thoughts? Suggestions? Comments? What are some good smaller cameras? Is there anything that will take good shots of active kids?

Thanks for your time!

I think it's time to get a new camera. Go to a store like Bestbuy, Costco, etc. and look at the latest. If you don't mind the larger sizes Canon SX10 and Panasonic FZ28 are good superzoom replacement cameras but there's plenty of other smaller models.
Also, to get good pics of active kids and avoid "lots of blurry pics" it helps to learn the aperture/shutter/ISO settings of your new camera.

Are the action shots of the kids indoors or outdoors? Do you need low-light capability, such as in a gym?

Small and portable as well as wanting good action shots indoors sometimes collide. The point and shoot cameras aren't as good at the indoor shots unless you buy a canon and figure out how to download the special program to allow your camera to shoot in RAW for some post processing tweaks to your pictures.

The Canon SX10 is a good camera that allows good zoom, is small, and you could find the program to get RAW out of that one.

Or, you could go to the Canon G10. I don't think it's much smaller than your S2 either.

Another option is to check out the smaller Nikon D40 or other smaller dslr cameras and step up your photography game. You will enjoy the results, but if you are looking for small and portable, you may have to give up some of that.

Thanks so much for the advice.

Its mostly the indoor low light things like dance recitals and the such where this is lots of movement.

I am thinking I may have to get 2. one for my pocket and one for the much needed better pictures.

Bigger is only an issue when I have a 1yo in my lap or other arm and the strap is being pulled on or i can get the right grip.

I saw that Nikon made a few smaller cameras, and am going to check those out.

Thanks again!!!

For low light things such as dance recitals, a point and shoot will not cut it. You will have to look at a DSLR. I'm not sure if this is something you were considering.

Go to the link in bob100's post above and see the amazing things he has accomplished with the Canon "cheat" program.

You can get pretty good pictures with a Canon bridge camera and the software "hack."

I've really enjoyed getting my own dslr, shooting in raw, and post-processing. My indoor shots and low-light shots have increased in quality 1000 percent.
