I purchased a Canon HF 100 right before halloween and now I'm looking at telephoto and wide angle lenses. I know that he mounting threads on the camcorder is 37mm. When I search on Amazon for 37mm lenses, I see some that are marked specificially for different cameras and models. Since they all screw in at 37mm, are the brand recommendations just marketing or is there a definite purpose.

You can pretty much use any, or use step-up/down rings to make them fit.

I think I use a 37mm thread on my panasonic, and it works great. You can't step "too much", or it may vinegette, but as long as you get close, you can step.

Personally, I DID look for a lens with the exact thread size, just so I wouldn't have the extra length of step-up rings.
