Calling home from the US

Sorry everyone, this is one of those annoying questions that gets asked all the time!

Could anyone please confirm that when I call home from Florida, I dial '01144' before the number? I live in Manchester so it would be 01144161... and so forth. Also, doesn't the +44 bit count for a zero? In which case, could I dial 0110161...?

I know the answer to this deep down (somewhere!) but my mind's gone blank and now I'm all panicky. I've Googled it, but everyone says different things!

You dial 01144 and then the phone number you want in the UK but miss off the zero :)
