Calling Cards~Budget Friendly calling home in Punta Cana

I am trying to figure out what is going to be the best priced way to go to call home and check up with the kids while we are on vacation in April.

Someone suggested purchasing a calling card at the resort. I know the hotel charges a connection fee for using a calling card. Has anyone done this in Punta Cana Dominican Republic?

In November we were out of the country on a Mexican Rivera Cruise and purposely set up international calling on our cell phones. But when we were there the phones did not work. Alltel is our carrier and they can not explain why this happened to us. I have even checked my online account with them and the service is on my account. Everyone we were with could use their cell phones but DH and I could not. So I really would love to have a way to call home. I do not mind paying for a card. I have been told they are $10 to $20 at the resort and the fee is $2 per connect. I will only need to call home a couple of times.

I was really wanting budget minded thoughts on this process.

I'm going to move this over to the CB, since it appears that you're not getting anything in the way of responses on the BB. I really can't help with calling card advice. We have AT&T and I've always had good connections when traveling abroad except in the most remote parts of Italy.

Our cell is with Alltel and although we have the international plan on our cell it did not work while in mexico in November. I am trying to find other options.
